If the Jets were named Polar Bears I would have embraced the team every bit as I did, and still would have purchased season tickets, and subscribed to TSN "Polar Bears"...
The vast majority of people would have as well. But it wouldn't change that a lot of people would be peeved and emotional about it.
The Roughrider/Rough Rider name, to explain it once and for all, was because Saskatchewan and Ottawa played in seperate leagues (the WIFU and IRFU respectively) for 46 years.... from 1912 to 1958.
Ottawa's name is related to the Rough Riders of the Spanish-American War Saskatchewan's name is related to the North-West Mounted Police
Yeah and if Ottawa gets an arena league football team they should go ahead and name it the Rough Riders! But not in the same, 9 team league
There was no way that the roughriders were going to want Ottawa sharing the name, their brand is so big now, somebody else using the same name cheapens the brand somewhat.
That said, there were so many other names that the new Ottawa team could have used.
I think Ottawa Rivermen has a nice ring to it. But, that name (and several other suggestions) are already used in pro sports somewhere. Redblacks is original, at least.... I guess. Let's just hope the Ottawa fan base buys into it. I think a third shutdown of CFL football in Ottawa would be the last.

I believe so. The Old/New Sens, Rough Riders, Lynx, 67s, Renegades... they all have a red/black combo.

It's not as bad as people are making out. It's like the old days where teams where just called after the city they played in and the nicknames just naturally occurred mainly from sports writers. The Red Sox, white sox, reds. The cubs got their nickname cause there was a bunch of young players on the team and the papers started to call them the cubs. Heck even the blue bombers were nicknamed that way too. The more I think about it the more I like it. They couldn't have their old nickname back so they went with a crazy older style. Who knows, maybe they once called them the redblacks way back when. But I suppose some of you would prefer a "vicious" name with some blank ing cartoon drawing on it.
