It's actually McGwire, not McGuire, not MAGWIRE.
Betting on baseball = lifetime ban. Doesn't matter if he didn't bet on his own games, everybody in the game knows somebody on every other team, it's not hard to imagine a phone call/passing of bills/etc.
PED's are bad, but so is amphetamine use, etc. You want to kick Hank Aaron out of the Hall?
Oh, and GTFO using a Home Run derby to decide games. And if you looked at viewership ratings across Canada you'd see they are huge, or watched the Jays play games in any border states... you'd see Canadian fans everywhere.

{snip} he bet on baseball...thats enough This is the crux of my confusion - a lot of vitriol because he 'bet on baseball'. I don't see why that's so horrible - and I think it's a lot less horrible then cheating with HGH or HRT or whatever those juicers were pumping into their veins. If I found out that Andrew Ladd played a Sports Select ticket picking Boston to beat Florida and the Rangers to beat the Islanders I'd have trouble understanding why he'd deserve to be banned from hockey for life. Again - if he bet that the Blackhawks were going to beat the Jets then I get the problem but if it's games he's not playing in... m.

IMO Pete wasn't playing sports select, he was gambling with some, shall we say; shady characters. According to Pete he never bet on his team to lose, but MLB's concern was/is if he bet and lost, to the point that he was in over his head, perhaps the people he owed money to, would say: 3 choices: Pay the money, or throw a couple of games, or we hurt your family, and bury you with our friend Mr. Hoffa. Your choices. MLB set and still is setting precedence with the Pete Rose situation. Let him in and say all is forgiven= Out of the next 100 guys putting their hand in that alligator pond one is gonna get bit!! Slippery slope.

You are surprised at me?
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who missed your sarcasm, I guess. Hint - if more than one person misses it, it's not that obvious!
Now go pour a cup of Earl Grey and chill!!

No doubt, what Rose did was wrong. But his continued blackballing is ludicrous. He has admitted it, apologized and paid a high price. It's a personal vendetta at this point.
Eventually he will be back in baseball and will be a huge star for it. But this is idiocy already.
