LOCATION Portage Eastbound 1946 Portage Avenue The Hartman Apartments The Academy for Science and Technology is a couple blocks east. This is a unit that is hiding in the driveway, using a handheld radar device to capture images. If your not aware, these handheld devices only do enforcement when held by the operator and pointed at a vehicle, so if the operator isn't pointing the unit, it doesnt continue to operate on its own like the previous units that where mounted in a fixed position. So now the equipment potentially is subject to human error. These guys are getting sneaky, please post for other locations these units are being seen.

It wasn't photo radar but I saw a cop doing the laser tag bit while hiding behind a garbage recycling bin on northbound Pembina by the University yesterday. He was bobbing up and down firing off at the unsuspecting masses, looking very much like a whack-a-mole in blue.

There's almost always one lately catching people driving North down Plessis rd, the guy parks just off Plessis on Rosseau.
And I don't know if the guy is on this site or anyone who knows him is, but hats off to the guy that spends hours a day standing a half block in front of the radar trap with a big sign saying "$LOW DOWN! Photo radar ahead".
When I retire I've always wanted to apply to work as a photo radar operator. Just sit in a car and not turn the camera on, see how long it would take them to fire you for not catching a single speeder.

WHat a disgrace this is. They should not be allowed to sit on private property to do this.
This is so clearly a matter of collecting as much revenue has possible, not about safety.
South bound Waverly through Waverly West is another perfect example of this. Cops dont set up where they might catch a handful of ignorant drivers exeeding the limit by 20+ km, they set up where they can catch hundreds of drivers going 10KM over, usually immediately following a transition from a higher speed.
When are they going to start ticketing drivers doing 20+ km BELOW the speed limit?

Thank God the cities in Alberta aren't cash strapped like Winnipeg. I've only had one photo radar ticket, and it was $70. In Winnipeg, I would have been looking at a $215.00 fine.

Seeing some examples on Twitter of citizens setting themselves up ahead of the speed traps with warning signs. Good for you!

Seeing some examples on Twitter of citizens setting themselves up ahead of the speed traps with warning signs. Good for you! I didn't mean to like this post, I wanted to quote it. There are lots of warning signs for people, the HTA and drivers handbook tells you what the speed limits are when you don't see signs posted. I think anyone that gets a ticket for speeding by photo radar deserves it. They are lucky they don't get demerits like the old days when they had the radar cars. Is this a cash gab? yes for those that choose to speed

Speed kills. Doesnt change the fact photo radar is about the money, not the safety.

Speed kills. Doesnt change the fact photo radar is about the money, not the safety. Actually, speed doesn't kill. Running into things kills. Moreover it's been demonstrated that there is an inverse relationship between speed limits and traffic fatality rates - in a variety of different studies. Driver Speed Behavior on U.S. Streets and Highways Samuel C. Tignor, Ph.D., and Davey Warren Originally published in ITE 1990 Compendium of Technical Papers Did the 65 mph Speed Limit Save Lives? by Charles Lave, PhD, Chairman and Patrick Elias, B.A. Dept of Economics University of California, Irvine Effects of Raising and Lowering Speed Limits Martin R. Parker & Associates, Inc. 38549 Laurenwood Drive Wayne, Michigan 48184-1073 The single biggest drop in deaths per million miles driven (the single biggest stat indicative of driving safety) happened when the 55 MPH federal speed limit was dropped. Traffic fatalities are a lot rarer with a 75 MPH speed limit than they were with the 55 MPH speed limit. m.

I've actually seen that before and it makes a lot of sense. There was a study around here that showed an increase in side impacts at red light camera intersections too, no? The enforcement is always done where there is a lot of vehicles, not where the safety is most paramount. Its done where new developments or construction alter a speed limit and people might be confused. Its all about money.

Speed kills. Doesnt change the fact photo radar is about the money, not the safety. Exactly. I don't think many people say that "traffic enforcement is a cash grab", they say that photo radar is, particularly the way it is used. Get a real cop to pull someone over when they feel someone is speeding. They will also likely notice the person is impaired (if they are). You don't get that from a photo radar camera... but you sure get a lot of tickets for people doing 63 in a 50 at 8:00 PM on a bright, sunny, summer day with ideal road conditions.
