Nope, not laughable. The several million dollar expansion fees did save the CFL when they were on the verge of bankruptcy. That the franchises lost money is irrelevent. CFL got their cash when they needed it. US expansion definitely did not save the CFL. I'm not sure where you are getting your information from, but US expansion did little, if anything, to benefit the CFL's financial picture, especially since the CFL lost more money during the US expansion, than gained in expansion fees. Additionally, most American clubs did not pay the CFL the full amount of expansion money, for various reasons. Baltimore was, by far, the most successful CFL American club, but even that franchise did not have to pay the full amount of expansion money. I could only imagine how little the CFL collected from the American teams that were never on sound financial footing.

The CFL was on the verge of bankruptcy and the money they gained in expansion fees saved them. The US teams collecively lost about $20 million but the money the CFL gained through expansion fees allowed them to continue. Following the end of US expansion, the CFL was again in trouble with no expansion fees coming in. The NFL agreement sustained them.
It was shortly therafter that Vince McMahon offered to buy the league.

It was shortly therafter that Vince McMahon offered to buy the league. Thank God the CFL did not sell to Vince McMahon. Imagine what a disaster that would have been.

omg.. i wanna throw up when i think of that guy buying the league.. gee the XFL really worked out for him didn't it. hahaha remember the xfl ? what a joke.
US expansion? It interests me but I just dont think it would sell..Unless it was placed in northern united states cities un like Shreveport and Las Vegas etc.. Baltimore was actually okay in attendance but it ended when NFL came there. Problem is alot of people in the states dont know a thing about the CFL and how big it is up here and what its about. Only way to do that is have it on a cable network in the states that broadcasts to everyone and not just espn 3 etc where you have to pay for the channel or have it with a sports package. And even then..they broadcast the lamest games like Toronto.. show a market with strong fans and make it appealing.. 18k in a 50k seat building isnt going to look appealing for people to go to.. show Saskatchewan and Winnipeg home games and Edmonton next year, never mind Toronto. Even BC would be a better option to broadcast to the US.

Not true. The XFL could have been a success. It was a good idea with poor initial execution. The ratings were very good initially. I think the negative media converage hurt it in the eyes of the fans a lot. Had the media been more positive (or unbiased) about it, the fans would have given it a chance to find its legs.
The NFL ripped off some of the XFL's concepts.
The McMahons being involved make people roll their eyes when they should have just given the league a chance. As the season progressed, they refined some of their antics a bit and it got better. I know some media hated Jim Ross and Jessie Ventura calling football and yet they were very good, especially Jim Ross. If he hadn't been associated with WWE, he would have been accepted easier. NBC dropping out after season one did them in. Vince would have given it another season to see what happened. Good thing he was a billionaire.
It is good Vince did not buy the CFL or else he'd have likely moved most of the teams. But WWE owning the Argos would have been good.

Yes, you must go to a weird market or it wont work. You know, like Baltimore. Really guys, think a little before posting. US expansion SAVED the CFL. Period. i'm really going to assume that you are being sarcastic.. that is in everyones best interest..

I hear that Winnipeg is in need of a football team. Maybe the CFL should consider expanding there.

My top picks for CFL markets and about US expansion follows as this.
1- Atlantic Canada (Moncton because it has a metro population base of around 2M people with in a two hours drive) 2- Quebec City Thats it in my opinion. People have thrown Saskatoon around but splitting the province up in Rider Nation I think would be a disaster.
US Expansion thoughts.
Baltimore worked. They did well with the CFL.Althogh I don't know how many free tickets they gave away or how many season ticket holders they had. In theri Grey Cup winning year they only had a parade of about 200 fans in Baltimore that celebrated the championship. No Tv station from the city or area of Baltimore even came up to Canada to get the game on TV to them either.. anyways they now have the NFL and wouldn't be possible to hold a CFL team as well. Other markets had decent attendance UNTIL NFL STARTED. Their average attendance went from averaging around 25K to under 10K. Once NFL was on CFL was an after thought at best. The cities chosen to hold teams were very strange places and not even remotely close to Canada. Memphis.. Shreveport , Las Vegas.. like..really? Why would you put CFL teams there. If the CFL were to do expansion into the USA again it would have to be geographically feasible. Anchorage is not an option. They don't have the population nor stadium. Their stadium is only 5K capacity. They would have to stick with the northern states. And even then it would be a battle because you have to compete with NCAA which is HUGE in the United States. CFL would also have to get rid of the Canadian talent ratio. It would be too hard to get Canadian players from Canadian universities to go play in a US based market. US talent would be their only options unless you get rid of the import ratio. Then is may as well be named a different league. Its the CANADIAN football league. Thats why we have restrictions on how many import players we play. So that IMO pretty much ends chances of CFL in the USA again.

Saskatoon ? would hurt Riders, so that is a plus, Sask has the most loyal fan base in the CFL
