Since the NHL is about to enter training camp mode now, there is a question that is bugging me and its about unlikely and surprising Stanley Cup wins. What I mean by that is which teams that won a Stanley Cup in a particular season were not even being considered by most fans and pundits as contenders in that particular season before it started! Anyone know of such examples? Please discuss. Thanks!

Devils in 95 was it? The first one over Detroit. NO ONE saw that one coming.

The Ducks' win in 2007 wasn't totally unexpected, but it was still a good one...
The near-win in 2003, though...!
One game away from capping one of the greatest playoff runs in NHL history...THAT would've been a Cinderella finish.

Tampa Bay, and Carolina. Even as a Pens fan I'll say Pittsburgh's 09 win was shocking because they looked down and out. I never gave up on them but everyone around me said they were done.

Yeah, Carolina in 05-06. They had a great record that year, 112 pts, 2nd in the Eastern conference but I don't think prior to the season anyone would have thought the Hurricanes would have won.

I would have to say the 1985-86 Montreal Canadiens. Everyone expected the Oilers to cruise into the playoffs and win their third straight Stanley Cup. For the Prince of Wales Conference, it was a toss up between the Flyers and Islanders to meet the Oilers in the final.
Nobody I knew would have thought Montreal would win the Stanley Cup that year, but with the Rangers shocking the Flyers, and the Islander being upset, and Patrick Roy coming out of nowhere to lead the team to the Cup final victory over the Flames (with help from the infamous Steve Smith goal), was really something to behold.

Other than the Canes in 2006, I can't think of too many shocking Cup Wins. I was pretty shocked that the Bruins won it this year though. But quite a few of the teams that lost in the Finals made it there shockingly (And I'm only going to list the 2005-06 season to present since I've only been watching sports since then, I can go farther but I don't really feel like it).
No one even expected the 8th Seeded Oilers to take Carolina to Game 7 in the Finals, especially after Roloson, who carried them through the playoffs, went down in Game 1.
Even the 2007 Ottawa Senators were surprising. Before that, year after year the Sens were picked to win the Cup or at least make it to the Finals, but they could never make it over the hump. Namely the 03 loss to the Devils (Although that was the 1 seed vs. the 2 seed, so it wasn't a choke), the 06 loss to Buffalo (Part of that was because Hasek was injured), and all those losses to the Leafs, were tough for them. But they did manage to make it to the Finals that year.
The '09 Penguins won it pretty shockingly, after being down 2-0 and 3-2, and then having to win Game 7 at the Joe.
The 2010 Flyers had a great run, unfortunately beating us in Round 1, then coming down from a 3-0 Series deficit and game 7 Deficit against the Bruins in the Semifinals, then lighting up Halak in the Conference Finals. They still held their ground against the Blackhawks in the Finals but thankfully they lost.
I read an article last September that had a list of teams that were contenders for the Cup. I remember the Bruins not being in it. But Peter Chiarelli did make some good Signings last summer, adding offense and all. They went down 2-0 against the Habs in Round 1, but won the Series in 7. But I'm shocked that they swept the Flyers after the nightmare that happened in 2010, especially since that time the Flyers had home ice. Then they went down 2-0 and 3-2 in the Finals against Vancouver but still overcame it. Talk about a team that never quits.

Tampa Bay in '04, especially considering the Flames actually won it in Game 6

Oilers in 1990. No way were they a cup team that year. Who the hell was Billy Ranford?
