Well here we are. A new beginning.
Welcome to The JetStream with Darren Ford.
The Winnipeg Free Press and I had been throwing this idea around for months before it became clear we were going to move ahead with it, frankly, by late day on May 31st. Ya know, that day we will never forget as long as we live.
That was the day that us believers were redeemed. Those who followed religiously at JetsOwner.com could finally look at those who made fun of us in the pubs and at the water cooler and say "I told ya so". And to make things even better we were about to embark on one of the greatest summers in Manitoba history with regards to weather, bugs and non-stop Jets news. From (extremely successful) ticket drives to logos and the draft to the unprecedented TV/radio contract, it was a summer like none other.
JetsOwner.com shut its doors just after the logo was unveiled. The JetStream begins on the eve of the jersey being unveiled, in early September as expected and noted in the final days of the ROTJ boards. The jerseys, to be shown for the first time to the world just blocks from my home, marks the final piece of the puzzle that concludes a summer that will forever be known as The Summer of Flight.
The Winnipeg Jets are home and about to take flight.
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have lifted off to a staggering (or should I say Swaggering) 7-1 record and lead the CFL in the standings.
The new Winnipeg Richardson Airport will be sending and receiving flights as our kids scream Trick or Treat.
The National Museum for Human Rights is reaching for the sky, higher each day, to the point where it is now taking its place as THE Winnipeg skyline icon.
The Goldeyes, IKEA, the new stadium.
It's all coming together. All those nights I spent creating a vision in my own mind about how I saw this city becoming were not wasted. They are here. Those maps and pipedream ideas of how our downtown would thrive one day. That day is here.
And you are here reading this because YOU were with me. You saw it too.
It's the re-birth people.
It would have been hard to comprehend even a year ago that Winnipeg would be the sports mecca of Canada. But we are. Big time.
Welcome to the spotlight and welcome to The JetStream. This weekly blog spot will take on a more consistent structure as the season begins and I will also float around the topics on a regular basis, as will several moderators. The JetStream features many cool bells and whistles and will be tweaked in the coming weeks until it is just the way I want it.
Thank you to all of the JetsOwner.com members for 8 fantastic years. It remains up on the net for viewing, but rests as it should, and was always intended to, once 100% was reached on the Jet-O-Meter.
Thank you to True North for how well all of this has been executed, from purchasing the Moose from Minnesota to purchasing the Thrashers from Atlanta.
Thank you to Mark Chipman for being so candid and trusting of me from the first time we spoke. It allowed me to keep all of your spirits high, mine included.
I have many thank-yous, but most of them were dealt at the closing bell of JetsOwner.com.
Spread the word about The JetStream and have fun here! The same rules apply. Differences of opinion are welcome, but it is all in your delievry. No personal attacks, whether sexist, racist or otherwise abusive, will be tolerated. Keep it real and keep it fun. I am not here to babysit, I am here to conduct a fan forum of our returned Winnipeg Jets.
Wow does that feel good to say. Winnipeg Jets.
