Hey guys. So my furnace went last night. I was just wondering what kind I need. The old one is from 95 and put out 100000 btu. Now I know things are more effective now so would a 80000 one be OK? My house is 13000 sq feet and is a bi-level. Your better off putting in 3 furnaces, strategically located, in your 13000 sq. ft. house. Seriously though, there's an app for that. Get the HVAC Buddy Load Calculator.

I fear this every day. My furnace is 30+ years old. Every year we have it serviced the guy begins by saying its way too old and ends with saying its in such good shape it's got a few years left.
I've probably jinxed it.

Putting in and sizing the furnace all depends on how old the house is, 2x 4 to 2 x 6 construction all these things go hand in hand, to bad I'm leaving in a few hours or I would hook you up with one of my guys that does stuff on the side. Side note call hydro/gas company and get them to check it out it is free and so are repairs threw them, you only pay for parts, most people don't know this it part of paying your monthly gas bill. If it is a older unit and it's not the heat exchanger that is shot most of the time it can be repaired, and it's a lot cheeper to switch that unit out in the summer, because you will now have to go with a power vented unit and you will half to get a hole drill threw the wall to vent the furnace, your chimney will no longer be required, also if you are going to go threw with the expense get them to check out your a/c A coil might be a good time to replace that too, and it will be a lot cheeper to do it with the furnace is being changed out..

The heat exchanger is f@cked. Lots of big cracks. I got a buddy of mine putting the new one in so I am already getting a great deal. He does it for a living so he knows exactly what to do. Not getting stressed about it. Nothing I can do but it's timing is pretty bad. Cheers

one winter, my pilot light was going out in my old furnace, i"d wake up, "$%#$", freezing cold, go all the way down to re light it, just to do it again in 2 hours. Had that Mb hydro deal back then and got a new one through Home Depot. Now I'm waiting on hot water tank which is actually 18 years old and going strong. knock on wood, this would be the worst time for one of those going.
