It is. I hate this worship gretzky thing. He never played for the majority of the teams. He isnt Jackie Robinson. All he did was score goals. No reason for teams that never employed the man to be forced to retire his number.

Jackie Robinson shouldn't have his number retired league wide either imo. He wasn't the greatest at anything or the most famour, Babe Ruth has an argument. Gretzky was just the Gordie Howe or Maurice Richard of his generation. When he put up his big numbers he played on stacked teams that in today's salary cap era are not possible. Personally I don't like the decision, he was lucky enough to play for those teams in the 80's and early 90's and I personally thing he's a dick but let's not make anything out of it more than it was. A pr stunt for the NHL.

best player ever doesnt mean every team has to honor him. That is completely moronic. He wasnt as important to sports as say Michael Jordan (not retired league wide)
No reason my team should have to honor a player that never played forthem

Id argue 3 players changed the game more than gretzky. Gretzky changed the game off the ice...but his skills were god like and never realy replicated or copied in a way that Orr changed the way D was played. Or a guy like Trekiak and later Patrick Roy changed the goalie game

if 66 was healthy he catches wayne.
if 4 had modern knee surgery he is guarding gretzky like white on rice in the 80s..and puts up even better numbers for his only 9 years of prime play. Imagine orr hitting a defensmans prime which goes well into a players 30s?

What would Gretzky of done if Roberts doesn't cross check him, buggering up his back for the rest of his career? Or was it Suter? 2014/15 - The official return of the "White Out"!!

If orr had arthroscopic surgery he plays another 10 years. instead knee surgery in his day was pretty much cutting somenes leg open then seeing which kind of scotch tape works best lol True on wynes back. but greatness doesnt matter when discussing if his number should be league wide retired. fact is i find it disrespectful to other teams history.

A better question is if it wasn't retired who would have the balls to use it?

A better question is if it wasn't retired who would have the balls to use it? eventually someone would. some kid who loved gretzky...hell Lebron wears 23 in the nba (went to 6 now back to 23)

It would just be weird to see another 99 in the league. I hated that Lebron wore 23 too. Hate he is going back to it.
