what a change. i will have many chances to watch future NHL'ers. even heard some guy on SD sports talk giant 1090, call in to say how pupped he was to have pro hockey back @ the SD sports arena. with 5 teams it can only promote the game out here

I hope the ECHL franchise gives the las vegas team to Worcester.
Also if the coyotes end up moving protland, portland would be a good place for a qc AHL team, put their echl team in St Johns (or vice versa)
I do hppe the ECHL gets as many teams as ahl teams and the ECHL becomes a true minor league structure

I hate it for those towns. Players too, I think sometimes if they are there for a couple of years or more the city they play in can start to feel like a second home. People lose jobs as well that hurts families and the community. I feel like the ECHL in the next couple of years will have 1 NHL team be an affiliate for each ECHL team and be a true AA league.
now sadly that the Barons are leaving town attendance is going up each night. I talked to a season ticket holder yesterday during my sons practice and he said the building was packed Friday night. Best crowd he had seen in 2 years, better than some car give away nights. I don't know if the Thunder sucking this year plays in to it or it's just the fact hockey will gone in a couple of months and the community is starting to rally around the Barons.

Stockton has a new unique downtown 10,000 seat arena that Thunderbay ppl can dream of. don't know much about the buildings the AHL is leaving but these new venues are great

I hate to be a Debbie Downer, but I would be shocked if any of these teams are in the same location, within 5 years. If AHL hockey can't work in places like Worcester, New Hampshire, Upstate New York, Abbotsford, and Oklahoma City, why on earth would it work in Stockton, Bakersfield, Ontario, San Diego, and San Jose? Bad move, AHL.

^ Three of the teams are being moved because of scouting and call up restrictions and it has nothing to do with how the team is recieved in their current markets. Calgary, San Jose and LA need teams closer to them in order to utilize their farm teams properly. San Jose will move in a few years once their is a viable arena for them to play in the rest will prolly stay put. Its like with Winnipeg and St. John's. The Ice Caps do well at the gate but the team is too far away to call players up quickly and scouting the team is an issue at that distance. That's why they are looking to Thunder Bay.

Say for instance your a California NHL and your AHL affiliate is in California but you call a player up while your on a east coast road trip it's still a far trip for that player. BS excuse it's all about California and the west coast being the sexy place for the AHL to be.

It's all logistics and doing what's best for the NHL. Mediocre attendance is secondary to what's best for the parent team. They're a farm league, that's the point.
