Well this came up relatively fast in the last week or two. Today TNSE oficially announced the relocation of St Johns IceCaps to Winnipeg next season. IceCaps name will stay in St Johns. Hamilton Bulldogs will re locate to St Johns and the OHL Belleville is suspected to play in Hamilton. Montreal Canadiens will house their AHL team in St Johns for 2 to 3 years until a 10,000 seat arena in Laval, Quebec is finished. Winnipeg will house their AHL team at MTS Centre indefinately. The possibility of Thunder Bay is on hold as no arena deal is reached yet. If AHL is successful again in Winnipeg its suspected the team yet to be named will stay long term.

I hope it works out, and I'm sure there will be interest in the short term. Not too optimistic that two pro hockey teams can survive in a small market though...

Small but passionate with plenty of families that cant afford to go to nhl. They said ave $20 a ticket at 5k per gameputs them in top few of revenues in AHL. I personally think thats very feasible. Calgary has WHL and is wildly successful. Edmonton too. Both play in same arenas as their NHL teams. Winnipeg team may not draw 8k per game but I think could easily draw 5-6

^ WHL has fewer games. This is exciting for sure but the Moose will not be a long term tennant in Winnipeg. They left in the first place for a reason.

Uh ya..they left because nhl came back. Otherwise they were consistantly in the top 3 teams for attendance. Population doesn't matter. Toronto has more than any city in canada and they cant draw 6k for AHL. Its because toronto doesn't support anything minior. Winnipeg does. There was a freepress poll that asked who would attend AHL. majority said they would support it.

This will be a good test because if they can turn a profit with the AHL team here along with the Jets, then when the AHL leave for T.Bay the WHL would now be a solid replacement.

Tim if the AHL works in Winnipeg without taking away from the Jets, then I don't see them coming to Thunder Bay. I believe Thunder Bay has until the end of the month to secure funding. There may be a guarantee from True North if they can secure the funding, that's the only way I see the AHL still coming to Thunder Bay. I did hear our mayor on the radio a week or so ago mention he was going to the governments with his arena proposal. So I would assume we should know something soon as most of these government funded deals are usually discussed behind closed doors. We will see if the mayor has enough private funding.

There has been a lot of time, money, and investment put towards T.Bay, True North Wants this, they are invested in it, if the funding comes threw they are gone.

^ I think they'll keep working towards T-Bay even if this current proposal dosen't work. Just makes too much sense to have the farm team there. Bring on the Thunder Bay SwampDonkeys.

I think Thunder Bay is inevitable. The main reason that you're hearing muted conversation about it now is that the team isn't even in Winnipeg yet; TN sure doesn't want talk about it leaving before it gets here.

Does TSN 1290 or CJOB get the radio rights?

^ Wow, that's a good question! Munzy and Kelly Moore are both available to do play by play...I would guess TN would lean towards TSN, the hand that feeds them but CJOB might make a good bid.
