The 2.0 version of the Manitoba Moose will be strickly a developmental team. General Manager Craig Heisinger told the 680 CJOB Upperdeck Sports Show Wednesday night they have informed long time Captain Jason Jaffray he will not be offered a contract and the team will a developmental team only.
“Jason Jaffray has been told he won’t be brought back. We will be clearly a developmental team. We’ll have alot of young players, alot of our draft picks, but no it won’t be a team full of Jason Jaffray or Mike Keane or Jason Krog type players.” Heisinger added, “We will play our young players and they will play alot. We’ll have some depth guys that are call up guys to Winnipeg but the model that was Manitoba or Hershey or Chicago will not be the model that we go with here. It’s a developmental team.”
Heisinger says with the number of draft picks developing and turning pro this model is needed in order to improve the Winnipeg Jets. “It’s absolutely out of neccesity. The only way we improve in Winnipeg and get some younger players in our lineup is to get them experience in the American League and the only way to get them experience in the American League is to provide them with ice time.”
The AHL announced it’s new alignment on Tuesday which will have the Manitoba Moose play in the Central Division with teams affiliated mostly with the same teams the Winnipeg Jets play in the Central Division in the NHL with a few exceptions. Moose Division rivals for 2015-16 include Charlotte-Carolina, Chicago-St.Louis, Grand Rapids-Detroit, Iowa-Minnesota, Lake Erie-Columbus, Milwaukee-Nashville and Rockford-Chicago. The new Pacific Division will include four California based teams.
“I can’t comment on how the West Coast initiative will work because it will be new for us as well. There’ll be some odd quirks with that but I think in the long run it will be good for the league,” Heisinger said. “It will take a year or two for that to sort itself out, obviously they’ll play this year and we’ll probably play some of those teams. Its always nice to play new teams and it will be a good trip for a team from Manitoba in the middle of January to go to California.”
The logistics of the Manitoba Moose in Winnipeg are still being worked out but GM Craig Heisinger did say they will likely practice more often than not at the MTS IcePlex.
