Colborne 6-5 213 had 19 goals 44 pts with the Flames last year. He is a big guy that skates well.... He is hitting the age 26 where Wheeler took off.
The Flames were worried he would get over 3M in arbitration.... duh... they paid Frolik 4.3 x 5 less point same TOI
If the Jets can't get Ladd on a 4M deal then Colborne would be a great addition at 3 - 3.5
Ehlers- Scheif - Wheeler Colborne- Little- Laine
Hold the presses on a Perrault extension.

Letting a player of that quality walk, Flames seem ready to be running into cap issues.

Colburne is not necessarily done in Calgary.
The Flames didn't qualify him because he would have been awarded in the neighbourhood of $3.5M in arbitration which the Flames don't want to pay.
The Flames and Colborne are still negotiating.
Something around $2.5 or less per year for a couple of seasons could work for both parties as Colborne is willing to take a hometown discount.

What would have changed to make Colborne want to give more of a hometown discount as a UFA than he was willing to give as a RFA?

The Flames were able to discuss contract with Colborne. It would have come up that he was going to ask 3.5-4M in arbitration... The Flames would have wanted to sign him for 2 -2.5 Pretty obvious the Flames figure given a choice of 2.5 x 2 or 3.75 x 2 the arbitrator was going to pick 3.75 x 2 9 time out of ten. I expect Colborne to be signed on July 1 to a 3-3.5 x 3.

So the Jets are looking at Okposo?
You'd have to think some young forwards would have to be moved in that scenario. Makes sense, move them for a dman or 4!
