Gary Bettman should lose his job over this one. Olympics is what was growing interest in the United states lots of lost potential with this move.

Uhhhh, it's the owners who don't want to go.
They hate having their assets putting themselves on the line, when it can easily damage a teams season.

The Olympic committee thought they could bully the NHL. This is the response from the NHL.

I'm going to miss seeing NHL'ers there when the time comes but I'll also be a bit relieved that none of our players will be there risking injury. It'll likely be back in next time around though.

Stupid decision. I know why the owners don't want it but I vehemently despise it. Olympic hockey is the best international tournament. Better than the crappy world cup by a million miles.

I think this is great, always said the World Juniors teams should be the guys competing every 4 years! But sadly money will get tossed around and the NHL will have a change of heart!

The Olympics is the only best vs best hockey tournament that everyone in the world cares about. Juniors, amateurs, AHLers... sorry I'm just not going to feel like it matters as much. The winner will always be tarnished with the knowledge that a whole bunch of countries didn't even have their best players there.

If the players want to go so badly then they should all refuse to participate in the Next World Cup of Hockey

We all know it will never happen, but if the IOC want a best on best tournament then it needs to be moved to the Summer Olympics the same way basketball is played, but the IOC wants their cake and eat it too. The NBA doesn't disrupt their season and would never even consider doing it to accommodate the IOC or the players. Bottom line is that owners pay the bills and unless there's some major incentive (moolah) there's no reason for them to bow down so that the IOC can cash in on the players' patriotism. Go back to the old days where it was just amateurs (true Olympic model), let the tv audience decide if it's worth watching, and let the NHL continue the season. For the players, if an olympic medal / patriotism is truly their #1 priority, then they need to push the IIHF/IOC to move to the summer. If having a best on best tournament is the players' #1 priority, then they need to push the NHL to partner with the IIHF and make the World Cup the top of the mountain.
People love to hate the World Cup and call it a cash grab, of course it's a cash grab and what's wrong with that? But growing that tournament and having it become the pinnacle of "best on best" is exactly what makes the most sense for the game. It won't happen overnight, but guaranteed if you shun the Olympics and return it to "unimportant status" while REGULARLY holding the World Cup it will absolutely grow in stature and relevance worldwide. The key is making the World Cup open and inviting to any player and any federation, it cannot be viewed as an NHL tournament. The NHL needs to partner with the IIHF for that tournament to make it truly international and give it some credibility. Soccer is the world's biggest game and they work their "best on best" tournaments around the major leagues (except in Qatar where the moolah was too hard to turn away even for Fifa, but that's what I mean about incentive). Nobody in the soccer world gives two craps about the Olympics, a lot of people don't even realize there is soccer in the Olympics, that is the model hockey needs to pursue and continuing to bend over for the Olympics only undermines the other tournament. There is no way that I as an owner or the NHL can continue to have this massive schedule variation every four years in perpetuity. The faster they get away from that model and move the best on best tournament outside of the regular league schedule the better it is for the game.
