There was another thread I was in that started to touch on this so instead of hijacking it I thought I'd start a new thread.
I'm sure every one of us has a gripe about minor hockey politics. Also feel free to respond with how minor hockey has benefited you for the better.
Personally I love to watch my kid play, I'd honestly miss a Jets Stanley Cup final game 7 to watch my boy play a house exhibition game. My boy is a bubble player, meaning he's usually either one of the last rep cuts or just makes the rep team depending on the year and the group. I've seen minor hockey from both sides of the fence (believe me there's a fence) and the politics are truly amazing. You almost have to be a politician just to keep your kid on the radar and get him noticed, assuming you want him to play at the best level possible. The cliques are also pretty hard to deal with and having a unique prospective of traversing both worlds I feel badly for parents that were always in rep that get ostracized when their kid falls into house. All of this contributes to hockey parent psychosis, which everyone assumes is parents wanting to get their kids into the NHL but a lot of times its just a fear of losing their standing with the group.
It's also a damn shame to see kids that just hate all the BS that comes with playing rep and decide not to even go for it anymore. We've had some real superstars in house that when I ask why they don't try out for rep say they just couldn't be bothered with all the nusto craziness that comes with it. They just want to play hockey. I wonder how many really good players simply just fall through the cracks because of this.
With all that said the camaraderie and friendships that my my boy have experienced because of hockey have never been surpassed by any other sport he's been in. For every crazy parent there's a great parent that loves the game and loves to watch their kid play just for the love of it. Not to mention the volunteers and referee's that show up and just do it. Its a really special thing
Anyway feel free to share your stories.
