I say trade him. Maybe sign/trade type of deal and get a young D in return or a decent young potential 2nd line centre and/or some high draft picks. Why?
- likely wants out - even if he wanted to stay, it would likely be at a premium which the Jets can't afford - Jets can't keep everyone as it is - he very good overall, but not elite offensively - his value has never been higher and - he's a UFA at the end of next season Trade him to the highest bidder. Do it smart. Work with his agent to devise sign/trade to maximize return.
Thoughts?

He's a very good player and been a good soldier for us, but in terms of difference maker for a Cup run, he's no impact player like Panarin or Bobrovsky imo. If we can't get a legitimate top 2 center included to fill the gaping hole even Hayes couldn't fill, then let's start stocking up on prospects and picks. Hoping Chevy can still swing something to get a first rounder back this year.

Chevy will get a first back for Trouba plus. Maybe a bigger package with Perrault or someone else. That would shed about 10 million to sign Laine and Connor. Then sign a free agent centre after July 1.

The other option is to wait until the trade deadline where the Jets can get a #1 pick and other assets but your options become narrower at that point and it's make or break.

On top of that if the team is steam rolling along ,back to playing like they should it's pretty tough to throw a wrench in the gears. If he is traded at the draft you have most of the season for his replacement to gell and the team to get use to not having him. Traded at the draft or signed to a good but reasonable contract is my preference.

I will add I said don't let him walk just because I think he is way to valuable.I think the return could be huge.A right hand D, young, plays a hard game with a bit of edge, some offensive abilities, was on our #1 D pair and had his best year. I doesn't get a whole lot better.

Where theres smoke...I'd move him for value due to this. Of course try to sign him but if not move him. Should be able to get a nice second line center. Larson got Hall I'd be happy with him!

Trouba turned out to be nothing special. I remember when they signed him. This great dman who hits and is still growing. Well you know what....he hinders this team. Doesn't want to be here..can't shoot a puck. BYE BYE
