I still remember when Dave Babych was sent to Hartford for Ray Neufeld in late 1985. I remember thinking "Who is Ray Neufeld?" The Jets had just come off their best ever season, and had gotten off to a slow start, but were still playing at .500 hockey. Immediately after the trade, the Jets went into a nosedive and ended up finishing 37 points worse than their previous season.
Are there any other trades the Jets made that you think were horrible? The Kris Draper giveaway comes to mind...

Randy Gilhen for Stuuuu Barnes. The logic behind this trade was we needed a center to win face offs

If I remember correctly, fans wanted more out of Babych, always down on him because he never used his size. Hindsight being what it is, yes it was probably a bad trade, Draper for a $1 was worse though

Would taking 26 year old Sergei Bautin in the first round when he could have been signed as a free agent be in this category? we passed on players like Darren McCarty, Martin Straka and Valeri Bure, Mike Peca and Kirk Maltby. Hindsight is always 20 20

I still remember the day Draper was traded. I was like WTF? He was a 21 year old highly regarded prospect. I still do not know what Mike Smith was thinking on that one...

Mike Smith was the worst GM ever, ruined the Jets and the Blackhawks

The Babych trade was bad. The one that angered me the most, and still does, is the Teemu trade. Bad trade for the franchise and terrible timing.

The one that angered me the most, and still does, is the Teemu trade. Bad trade for the franchise and terrible timing. I agree with this being the worst trade. From what I understand, was Teemu not traded due to the new owners not wanting to keep both players on the Coyotes. I heard the Coyote owners did not want to pay for two superstars, so they decided to deal Selanne away due to the fact that Tkachuk was: -more marketable -American born -spoke English without an accent I know this may seem weird, but for a State that is largely unfamiliar with hockey, the owners felt that people would be much more likely to identify with Tkachuk and not Selanne. This proved to be unfounded, as Selanne became massively popular in Southern California, but that is what I have heard as the primary reason Teemu was dealt.

This makes me laugh. Big reason why the Coyotes sucked.
Babych for Neufeld was pretty brutal, no offence to Ray.

Fergie at his worst .Babych was such a high draft pick (2nd overall) and the his rookie year with the steak of no wins then finally the team is a contender and JF sends him on his way ! his drafting of Jimmy Mann was pretty bad too

Dave had to leave town ASAP because of stuff between his wife, Dave and the Golden Boy. Remember Dave's mysterious shoulder injury late that season, came from a boxer not a hockey player. Fergie did him favor and got him out of town fast!

you talking about Donny Lalonde??....ok i know Donny Lalonde was WBC Lightheavyweight Champion of the World, but he fought so weird. Surely Babych could have beaten the crap out of him. i never heard this story before. very interesting.

^still not a good reason to trade Dave, he was a fan favorite and played good D ! Lalonde being the reason for the trade seems too strange ! i don't think it's true but with JF being gone i guess we will never know
