Calgary Flames defenseman Travis Hamonic just announced that he will not compete in the playoffs due to his young daughter having a respiratory condition.

Sven Beartschi from the Canucks opts out. I believe the players have till Monday to opt out. I imagine there will be a few more

The Hamonic case is interesting. I totally respect his decision, and judging by what Flames fans are saying, this is his last season in Calgary, and he wants to stay close to Manitoba. The Jets can really use him. Perhaps Chevy would try to entice him to sign with the team, next season.

He seems or at least appears to have declined rapidly but could still be a useful player.Perhaps a change in scenery would spark him. I respect his decision as he has a small child who has recently had respiratory issues

As Bobby Orr said, he had to make a choice between playing more hockey or being able to play with his kids and he was never sorry that he chose his kids. Good on him.

I hate speculating but here I go...in the early reports of Bryan Little's injury there was a report of brain injury including bleeding in the brain itself. A very significant injury if true. Much more than the stated perforated ear drum and persistent dizziness. His non-playing status is more in keeping with that type of injury. His salary and insurance will allow him to come back to the game on his terms and not because he "has to" provide an income for his family's sustenance. Regardless, I wish him well on whatever path he chooses. He was/is a class act.

Jack Adams coach of the year nominees were announced and Paul Maurice wasn't one. I am not a fan of his but I feel he should be recognized for keeping the club a float when all could have mailed in valid excuses and quit. And as some other bright fellow said; great goalkeepers make you look like a great coach and I sure hope Hellebucyk gets recognized for his outstanding work last/this season!
