The departures were spread throughout the line-up, i.e. they did not disproportionally lose top players or players at one position. Their leading scorer, defenceman Travis Verveda, is back. He had 3 goals and 8 assists in 20 games. Their leading goal scorer, Brayden Brown, had 5 goals in 20 games and has departed. One would think that the newcomers can replace the departed since the scoring numbers were not that high. That said, the team was playing a lot better by the end of the season, so I infer that they had a decent degree of chemistry under their former coach. The recruiting class, at first blush, looks like a decent replacement for the departures. However, the loss of key players raises issues with respect to chemistry after the team is coming off their best two-season run since the days of bell-bottoms. The major loss is clearly going to be in goal where Rylan Toth is gone. He was their best player and a conference all-star. Links: ➤ LeagueStat: 2021-22 UBC Team Stats ➤ UBC: Roster Page

Preview: September 23-25: THE GREAT G.P.A.C. REVIVAL! MANITOBA BISONS (0-0-0, 2-0-0, OHT35 #n/a) LAKEHEAD THUNDERWOLVES (0-0-0, 0-0-0, OHT35 #n/a) REGINA COUGARS (0-0-0, 1-2-1, OHT35 #n/a) Friday, Sept 23rd at 7:00 CDT at The Rink: Lakehead v Manitoba Saturday, Sept 24th at 5:00 CDT at The Rink: Regina v Lakehead Sunday, Sept 25th at 2:00 CDT at The Rink: Manitoba v Regina Links: ➤ GoBisons: Schedule & Results ➤ UofR: Schedule & Results ➤ Lakehead: Schedule & Results This weekend round-robin is a GPAC revival. The Bisons, Kittens, and (former) Nor‛Westers used to be GPAC rivals, along with the Brandon Bobcats and Winnipeg Wesmen. The Wesmen folded their hockey team (after the 1983-84 season) and the Nor‛Westers folded all sports programs (after the 1984-85 season). That left the Bobcats, Bisons, and Kittens to join the CW. The end of this conference has been great for Bison hockey. However, a one weekend revival is nice for nostalgia purposes. Once Lakehead brought back sports, and joined the OUA as the Thunderwolves (in 2001-02), the Bisons were invited to visit Thunder Bay over the Christmas season on a semi-regular basis. However, I don‛t believe that Lakehead U has visited Friendly Manitoba since the GPAC days. The Wayne Fleming Arena is undergoing renos and is not available through the end of October. Hence, the games are shifting to The Rink Training Centre (on Wilkes, technically in Oak Bluff although within the perimeter). It is supposed to be a great place to play. The elevated spectator area looks very basic, like any community arena but with a nice view. I‛ll find out! The Bison men, Bison women, and Winnipeg Ice of the WHL are all playing at The Rink for now. Manitoba hosts the 3-way dance, Sask and Calgary play a traditional weekend double-header, and Holy Trinity has a bye. That leaves four sides, plus NAIT from the ACAC, to randomly pair off in single games over the weekend. Before Covid hit and MacEwan left the ACAC for the CW, these two cross-town rivals played three straight finals, all won by MacEwan after finishing second to NAIT in the regular season. So this is a rivalry re-kindled. U.B.C. This was a case of ugly goaltending for the new recruit from the NCAA. The shots on goal clock was not necessarily accurate. I think they just counted the saves. In any event, the shot clock said 17-12 in favour of the Bisons. Hawryluk‛s save percentage is taking a pounding! I am not sure who all is in camp but I did not see anybody being an overwhelming favourite to be #1. Here‛s the very unofficial summary: 1st period LU 1-0 #25 Massie LU 2-0 #28 Auger UM 2-1 #10 Skoleski (PP) Penalties: UM #9, LU #13, LU #11 2nd period LU 3-1 #27 Mack LU 4-1 #28 Auger Penalties: UM #22, LU #19, LU #10, UM #18 3rd period LU 5-1 #13 Fox (SH) LU 6-1 #27 Mack (SH) UM 6-2 #21 Basarab Penalties: LU #28, LU #27, LU #9, UM #26, LU #32 This was an exceptionally sloppy game. Bad passes and not a lot of quality play-making. Lakehead took their penalties in pairs, providing 5-on-3 powerplays in the process. The first time, the Bisons scored. But the second, Lakehead scored twice, once on a blueline breakaway on a bad pass and the second when a player exited the box and had an instant breakaway. Prior to the 3rd period shorthanded goals, the Bisons had immense pressure every shift and were really carrying the play. The lack of offensive finish hurt them. September 24: THUNDERMUTTS COMPLETE THE SWEEP The Bisons had a bye on Saturday, but there were plenty of games in the CW and elsewhere. Three overtime games in the CW alone. OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD LAKEHEAD THUNDERWOLVES 6 REGINA COUGARS 5 (in overtime)Links: ➤ Regina: Schedule & Results ➤ Lakehead: Schedule & Results ➤ Twitter: UofR Mens Hockey ➤ Twitter: Lakehead U Hockey This game was slated to start at 5:00 CDT on Regina‛s page and at 6:00 EDT on Lakehead‛s. So I arrived at 5 to 5 and it was 1-1 early in the 2nd period. By the time I got myself a drink from the machine, Regina made it 2-1 and I did not see the number of the scorer. Here‛s what happened from that point onward. The shot clock gave Regina the edge, 18-17. So not a lot of stops. And there is no guarantee as to accuracy of my summary. The winning goal was set up by a penalty in 3-on-3 overtime, in the neutral zone on Lakehead‛s trailing player. Not a wise penalty at that stage of the game. Being down 5-3 late in the 3rd, Regina rallied to tie the game and a win seemed inevitable, until the PP happened. The schedule says that the finale between the Banjo-Cats and Bisons goes Sunday at 2:00 at The Rink. Hopefully that‛s accurate. Maybe I‛ll get there early and bring myself a sub. U.B.C. Murphy played the last two periods, and gave up one goal. Evanoff went the distance for the Banjo-Cats. Harkness was not terrible, but did not play as well as Murphy. The first shot he faced went through the 5-hole. The second goal came after Toth (rookie defenceman) turned over the puck around his own blueline. He is good at carrying the puck so hopefully this won‛t damage his confidence. The third goal came when the 4th line was confused about their defensive roles and a high slot shot found its way through the maize. The only goal on Murphy was a 3-on-2 break by Regina against the 4th line. Hooker‛s goal was a shot in the slot and Skoleski‛s came just after a PP finished and Regina was still scrambling. Usually teams have 25 or more. I‛ll be looking for more announcements. One recruit (Joseph) is coming over from Trinity Western. However, Bedrock U has a much better than average return rate on this year‛s squad. They did lose their top scorer (Elder) but otherwise their losses were spread throughout their line-up. Manitoba and Saskatchewan are the only teams with a 2021-22 roster page. Links: ➤ LeagueStat: 2021-22 Calgary Team Stats ➤ Calgary: Roster Page

Instead, they will travel to the Excited States for a pair of games. On Saturday, they will visit The Ralph and likely playing the NCAA‛s 4th ranked team before about 10,000 fans. On Sunday, they make a short trip east where they will face Bemidji State, themselves ranked 4th out of eight teams in the CCHA. Back in the day, Bemidji State and last week‛s opponent Lakehead were conference and NAIA rivals before Lakehead joined GPAC and Bemidji State joined the NCAA. Speaking of which, I have linked a local TB news story about last weekend. To have any degree of success this weekend, the Herd will need much stronger goaltending than either starter provided last weekend. The live links may be altered prior to game time. Updated live links are likely to be available from the opponents‛ schedule & results pages. The CW Coaches‛ Poll was announced at the links. Here‛s the summary of the poll in comparison to the actual pre-season results. NOTE: Coaches ranked all opponents 1-8. After that, Mac won just one more game and Regina had a solid season. The Banjo-Cats were a tough opponent for anybody. The CW Coaches‛ Poll has these teams 7th and 8th. FWIW, there is a big gap between #7 and #8. ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS (2021-22: 16-3-1, 6-1-1, OHT35 #n/a) MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS (2021-22: 13-6-1, 4-2-0, OHT35 #n/a) Links: ➤ UofA: Bears picked as Canada West favourites ➤ CW: Alberta Team Preview ➤ CW: Mount Royal Team Preview ➤ MRU: Ticket Information ➤ MRU: MHKY: 2022-23 Season Preview In my opinion, these teams were the CW‛s top two in the exhibition schedule. Whilst the Evil Monkeys are 1st in the Coaches‛ Poll, the Bluegars moved into 2nd. They played two exhibition games against one another, each claiming a win. This is a home-and-home series. The Bluegars have threatened to break into the CW‛s upper echelon for a while now but have never quite made it. Also, you can‛t pay cash for a ticket at MRU. I loathe this trend. Sept 30: CW SEASON STARTS WITH BISONS‛ BYEThe Bisons start with a conference bye but instead have a Saturday-Sunday weekend. Before we get to Friday‛s games, there is some additional news. The guys at 49-Sport did a pre-season breakdown of the CW. That story is linked. Also, UMFM radio and Bison Sports could not make a deal on broadcasting rights, so nothing is expected to happen in that regard this year. A story is linked along with a podcast preview episode. Finally, UND posted some notes and a 17 page PDF for the Saturday night game. Links: ➤ 49-Sport: Breaking down each Canada West Men's Hockey team ➤ Hockey Blog in Canada: The Art Of Negotiation? ➤ UMFM: Podcast ➤ UND: NOTES: No. 4 NoDak set for exhibition opener vs. Manitoba ➤ UND: Game Notes (pdf) The guys at 49-Sport made a conjecture-based selection of the USports Universiade team. I suspect a few Evil Monkeys will be selected. Mac: Abel (34 shots-29 saves). The Banjo-Cats need to lobby the schedule-maker in order to play somebody else to start next season. They started last season going 0-2-0 against the Griffins. The first period was even, with 2 goals on 14 shots for each side. However, the Mythical Mutants scored 3 goals on 7 shots in less than 9 minutes of the 2nd period to chase Mager from the Regina net. The Kittens were purring in the 3rd, closing the score to 6-5 before an empty-netter sealed the deal. The PPs were clicking, with Regina 3-for-5 and MacEwan 1-for-2. Also, the Manitoba Moose are now headed to Regina for an exhibition game during Regina‛s bye week. The Moose have played the Bisons six times, holding a 4-2 edge. No games have been played since 2010. But once the Evil Monkeys started tossing bananas in every direction, the Bluegars were bamboozled. The defensive focus for the Monkeys was impressive. The held the Bluegars to just 4 shots in each of the 2nd and 3rd periods. This game had a nicely staggered start time, 30 minutes after the first two games and 30 minutes before the game from British California. So I tuned in when Alberta had things sewn up in their game. Last year, Sask had a great broadcast but this was weak. It sounded like they asked for volunteers from the crowd. The game wasn‛t much to look at, either. The Banjo-Mutts treated Holy Trinity like fire hydrants. CALGARY DINOSAURS 2 U.B.C. THUNDERBIRDS 5 Links: ➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW ➤ UofC: Team Website ➤ UBC: Team Website

Mitch Dyck opened the scoring in the 1st period, which ended tied 1-1. However, UND scored four times in the 2nd period to salt it away. In the nets, Brett Murphy started and played two periods, making 26 saves. Ross Hawryluk came on the 3rd period and made 11 saves. After the disaster against Lakehead, this is encouraging. I managed to catch the period after my Saturday shopping and it was all one-way traffic. I switched over to the UBC game in the intermission and missed seeing the Mutants‛ rally to make it 4-3. Three goals in less than 5 minutes put this away for the Kittens. On the night, Regina was 4-for-7 on the PP, whilst Mac was just 1-for-8. CALGARY DINOSAURS 4 U.B.C.
