Oct 5: BISON PREVIEW CHARTS Ahead of the Thursday weekend preview (which will hopefully have links to preview stories from all teams), here is a look at the Bisons in chart form. The first chart contains the Bison record against each opponent last year, plus the number of games against each opponent scheduled for 2022-23. In 2021-22 the Covid lockdowns caused the shortening of the season, down to 20 games. This year the CW is back to 28 games. But whereas before this meant an even four games against each opponent, it now means that two opponents must be played only two games in one series. For the Bisons, that means they will face MacEwan and Saskatchewan in just one series. Looking back, the Bisons did fairly well against the better teams. They split with Alberta, Mount Royal, and Calgary. Against UBC they had a one goal loss and an overtime loss. Even the 1-3-0 against Saskatchewan is not particularly disastrous. The big problem was the 0-4-0 against Regina and 1-1-0 against TWU. It was those results which got them eliminated from the playoffs. In overall recruiting and roster turn-over, it seems that Manitoba and MacEwan improved and everybody else was weakened, even if ever so slightly in some cases. I suspect that the Covid lockdowns, which caused an unprecedented mid-season exodus across the country, took their toll. Time will tell if this was just a one-off. The Bison forwards are so-so. They did not have reliable scoring a year ago. They did return 11 of their top 13 scorers, the big loss being Keaton Jameson. I suspect that their replacements for him and the low-end departures (players with 3 or fewer points) will be adequate. The defence should be a strength. They will be sitting two solid prospects each game. Provided they are coached within a reasonable defensive system, they should do well. They have five WHL grads, veteran Mitch Dyck, and two highly rated MJHL rookies. The goaltending is a big question-mark. The games I saw against Lakehead and Regina were cringeworthy at times. Brett Murphy, last year‛s #3 at the start of the season and #2 at the end, looked steady. His only game last year was a win over Saskatchewan. I do not want to jump to conclusions on the newcomers, but they will need to prove themselves. At the same time, the same thing can be said in Regina and UBC (where their losses in net are especially pronounced), and to a lesser extent on other teams. October 7: T-IRDS WIN HIGH-SCORING OPENER U.B.C. THUNDERBIRDS 6 MANITOBA BISONS 4 Links: ➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW ➤ Game reports: LeagueStat : CW ➤ UofM: MHKY: Bisons battle from 3-0 down, but can't complete comeback, falling 6-4 to UBC (with boxscore) ➤ UBC: Birds down Bisons in wild third period Before I get to the game news and views, those UBC uniforms are tough to read. They have a chest-high dark blue hoop which sits nicely behind a primarily white logo but which obscures the dark blue numbers. This was worse than Manitoba‛s black numbers on a dark brown jersey, or Regina‛s yellow numbers on a white jersey, in past seasons. Here‛s how they lined up: MANITOBA Goal 34 Hawryluk (35 Murphy) Defence 2 Stewart - 27 Gottfried 8 Toth - 6 Dyck 16 Hartje - 4 Malchuk Forwards 10 Skoleski - 22 Davis - 17 Veloso 18 Hooker - 9 Thiessen - 11 Ostir 20 Apetagon - 19 Arpin - 21 Basarab 13 Sutter - 28 Behun - 29 King Scratches 1 Harkness (G) - 5 Schioler (D) - 12 Patrick (D) 14 Keane (F) - 23 Fawkes (F) - 26 McCorrister (F) U.B.C. Goal 30 Lane (60 Schwebius) Defence 40 Smart - 26 Lambos 24 Lee - 43 Pouliot 9 Smith - 27 McDonald Forwards 17 Kindree - 21 Huo - 29 McNabb 39 McIndoe - 15 Atkinson - 41 Williams 23 Rask - 37 Douglas - 34 Mutala 8 Miller - 10 Doust - 13 Wismer Scratches 7 N Form (D) - 12 Keon (D) - 14 Kryski (F) 18 J Form (F) - 19 Sandhu (F) - 31 Luding (G) Quick summary: UBC: J. Davis (10:37 3rd) , B. Davis (14:32 3rd) Goal: UBC: Lane (15 shots, 11 saves), Man: Hawryluk (34 saves, 29 shots) I‛ve seen new goaltender Ross Hawryluk play twice now and it seems clear that if the Bisons ever want to win a game with him in net they‛ll need at least 5 goals. He allowed three weak goals from what were not quality scoring chances, and one mishandled puck set up a 4th. Unless those two games are not all reflective of his unreported exhibition games, this could be a big problem. The T-irds grabbed a 2-0 lead early, despite not really generating a Grade-A scoring chance. The period ended with the Herd trailing 3-0. I was a bit surprised to see Hawryluk back in goal for the 2nd period. The Bisons adopted a new strategy, so it seems. They iced the puck at every opportunity. This ended the problem with turnovers and the easy goals on long shots. Even when UBC won the ensuing face-off, all that would happen is whack-and-hack in the slot, and Hawryluk does well against those sort of shots. The Bisons tied the game at 3-3 mid-way through the 3rd. However, at that point they couldn‛t get a save when needed. UBC‛s 4-3 goal was on a turnover by Hawryluk. The Bisons tied it up a minute later, but the tie only lasted 15 seconds. An empty-netter sealed the deal. The rematch goes Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at The Rink. There isn‛t much for seating so the crowd is really jammed tight. BISONS BEAT BEMIDJI MANITOBA BISONS 4 BEMIDJI STATE BEAVERS 3 This was scheduled for Sunday, October 2nd. There was nothing about this on the Bemdji site, but the score popped up on the Bison Schedule & Results page. The win gave the Bisons a 3-3-0 pre-season record, and a split of their tour of the Excited States. Maybe Hawryluk had a good game. I have no details, nor do I know where to find any. The 3rd period shots were 23-4 for the Monkeys, but each side scored just once. Just three games into the season and Sask is the only team with three wins. October 8: SEVEN GOALS NOT ENOUGH U.B.C. This game forced me to miss seeing the Blue Jays blow an 8-1 lead. One good thing: The line-up pages they distributed listed the players by line and specified the scratches. Here‛s how they lined up, cast in order of appearance: MANITOBA Goal 35 Murphy - 1 Harkness Defence 8 Toth - 6 Dyck 16 Hartje - 4 Malchuk 2 Stewart - 27 Gottfried Forwards 12 Patrick - 19 Arpin - 28 Behun 10 Skoleski - 22 Davis - 17 Veloso 18 Hooker - 9 Thiessen - 11 Ostir 29 King - 21 Basarab - 20 Apetagon Scratches 5 Schioler (D) - 13 Sutter - 14 Keane (F) 23 Fawkes (F) - 26 McCorrister (F) - 34 Hawryluk (G) U.B.C. He also moved from D to LW and his line was the first over the boards in the 1st and 2nd periods. Also, Hooker was injured 5 minutes into the game and did not return. The injured list may have grown. Quick summary: UBC: E. McIndoe (11:31 1st) , C. McNabb (13:04 1st) , C. McNabb (16:39 1st) , S. Atkinson (18:17 1st) , C. McNabb (02:13 2nd) , S. Atkinson (09:28 2nd) , J. Lee (03:03 3rd) , C. Davis (19:57 3rd) Goal: UBC: Schwebius (31 shots, 24 saves), Man: Murphy (16 saves, 11 shots), Harkness (23 shots, 21 saves) The Bisons could set records for the most losses by a team scoring 7 goals (maybe 5 and 6, too). Eleven goals in the series, and not even an OTL point. Now many of UBC‛s goals, especially the early ones, were on blown coverages. But the numbers speak for themselves. The game was tied 6-6 after two, and the Bisons had some momentum. Then a drifter from the point eluded Harkness. There were then no more goals until an empty-netter. The Bison PP was 2-for-6 (4-for-10 on the weekend), which sounds good until you consider that the T-irds went 4-for-5 (4-for-8 on the weekend). Other Links: ➤ USports: Schedule/Links ∞ Standings ➤ CW: Home Page ∞ Season Schedule ∞ Daily Schedule ➤ LeagueStat: Media Stats ∞ Daily Schedule This is an important series for the Bisons. Their 0-4-0 record against the Banjo-Cats (and 1-1-0 record against Holy Trinity) is what did them in last year. These teams split a pair of pre-season games, both winning away. Regina cannot be happy with an away split against The Family Guys on opening weekend and should be feeling some pressure in their home opener. Bison d-man Chase Hartje was the U of M‛s male athlete of the week last week, as per the linked story. Although the Bisons and Kittens have played just twice each (whilst the rest of the conference has played four games) the Bisons have the top two scorers in the conference (Hartje is 2-6-8 and Brett Davis is 4-3-7) and Devon Skoleski (2-4-6) sits at 11th. Generating goals has not been the problem for the Herd, it is stopping them. Including the pre-season, they have surrendered 39 goals in 8 games. Simon Harkness has "normal" regular season numbers (0-1-0, .913 S%, 3.26 GAA) after playing 36 minutes in relief. However, he came out of the pre-season at #3 on the depth chart. IMO, as goaltending goes, so go the Bisons. I‛ll be interested to see what they do. Whoever got the win in Bemidji must have played well enough to beat Regina. The Bisons must have confidence that they can generate goals in this series. I‛ll be hoping they can hold Regina below 8 goals. Also, I'll be interested to see which, if any, of the injured players will return to the lineup. Last week, Schioler, Keane, Fawkes, and McCorrister were on the IL and Hooker was injured early in Saturday's game. October 14: BISONS GET GOALTENDING! MANITOBA BISONS 2 REGINA COUGARS 1 Links: ➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW ➤ Game reports: LeagueStat : CW ➤ UofM: Team Website ➤ UofR: Team Website Quick summary:Man: C. Veloso (04:38 2nd) , C. Culling (10:32 3rd) Goal: Man: Hawryluk (40 shots, 39 saves), Reg: Meger (14 shots, 12 saves) This was a much-needed victory for the Herd, which leaves the teams level at 1-2-0 going into Saturday‛s rematch. The main observations: 1. None of the injured Bisons returned. 2. Goaltender Ross Hawryluk played by far his best game for the Herd. 3. The game winning goal was an end-to-end rush by defenceman Chase Hartje. It was a “Bobby-Orr-Goal”, like the one he had last weekend. He also had an assist and should be the leading scorer in the CW. I was watching the Jets beat the Rangers along with this one, so a great night for intense viewing. Three CW games started at the same time, so I didn‛t see much else. The first two periods were extremely defensive. The Bisons built a 2-0 lead, although being outshot 17-13. Manitoba was hanging on for dear life in the 3rd period. The shots were 23-1 in favour of Regina. Hawryluk definitely deserved the 1st star. That kind of goaltending would be the best news from the Bisons going forward. October 15: SECONDARY SCORING PACES BISONS TO SWEEP MANITOBA BISONS 4 REGINA COUGARS 3 (in overtime)Links: ➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW ➤ Game reports: LeagueStat : CW ➤ UofM: MHKY: Stewart scores the game-winner in OT, Bisons beat Regina 4-3 (with boxscore) ➤ UofR: Team Website Quick summary:Man: D. Culling (18:10 3rd) Goal: Man: Hawryluk (35 shots, 32 saves), Reg: Evanoff (29 shots, 25 saves) What stands out in this game is that the Bison top line was held off the scoreboard, but three players nailed their first of the season. Dylan Thiesssen (with a goal and two assists) and defencemen Mitch Dyck and Sam Stewart also scored their firsts. Tony Apetagon scored his 3rd goal of the season, and it was also the third Bison goal in a 58 second span of the 2nd period to erase a 2-0 deficit. The Banjo-Cats scored with their goaltender pulled to force the OT. Stewart‛s OT winner was scored in the 4-on-4 segment of OT on a 2-on-1 setup from Thiessen. Ross Hawryluk gave the Herd another solid performance in goal. This is just what the Bisons needed. Hopefully some of the injured players will soon return. This would be a good time to point out that the two teams UBC will face just once are Alberta and MRU. Based on last year‛s standings, this was like winning the lottery. In this game, Jared Dmytriw scored his league-leading 5th and 6th goals of the season to lead the Banjo-Mutts. There are now five Ukrainians in the CW‛s top 20 scorers, plus three of the top 10 goaltenders. They should get a ?Team Ukraine? together over Christmas time for an exhibition game. I randomly tossed out the possibility of a Team Ukraine from the CW in an earlier post. So I looked up rosters and plucked out all the Ukrainian surnames I could find. Now, there may be more players with a Ukrainian mom and a non-Ukrainian dad who could expand this roster. There are four goaltenders, five defencemen, and 15 forwards. Of those 15 forwards, EIGHT had a point-per-game or better last year. GOALTENDERS 1 Carl Stankowski - Calgary (2nd) 1-1-0, 2.33 GAA, .929 S% 34 Ross Hawryluk - Manitoba (1st) 2-1-0, 2.95 GAA, .917 S% 30 Adam Evanoff - Regina (1st) 1-1-0, 3.15 GAA, .890 S% 30 Carl Tetachuk - Calgary (1st) 2-2-0, 4.11 GAA, .872 S% DEFENCEMEN 9 Zach Wytinck - Calgary (2nd) 6 GP 2-2-4 22 Ethan Sakowich - Alberta (2nd) 6 GP 2-1-3 4 Parker Malchuk - Manitoba (1st) 4 GP 0-2-2 27 Jade Senkoe - MRU (1st) 3 GP 0-1-1 26 Carter Wolski - Alberta (2nd) 0 GP FORWARDS 13 Riley Sawchuk - MRU (2nd) 5 GP 4-8-12* 23 Nolan Yaremko - MRU (3rd) 6 GP 3-8-11* 10 Josh Prokop - Alberta (2nd) 6 GP 4-6-10* 15 Jared Dmytriw - Sask (3rd) 6 GP 6-3-9* 10 Devon Skoleski - Manitoba (4th) 4 2-6-8* 14 Eric Florchuk - Alberta (2nd) 6 GP 2-4-6* 25 Jaxan Kaluski - Sask (2nd) 6 GP 2-0-2* 20 Aiden Bulych - Sask (2nd) 6 GP 0-3-3* 11 Scott Mickoski - Regina (3rd) 4 GP 2-1-3 23 Alec Zawatsky - Sask (2nd) 6 GP 2-1-3 27 Merritt Oszytko - MacEwan (1st) 2 GP 2-0-2 22 Marc Pasemko - MacEwan (1st) 4 GP 1-0-1 11 Chantz Petruic - Sask (2nd) 2 GP 0-1-1 12 Eric Houk - Regina (1st) 4 GP 0-1-1 13 Tanner Fincaryk - Alberta (1st) 1 GP 0-0-0 * denotes player who had at least a point-per-game in 2021-22 That set of forwards would be by far and away the best set of forwards assembled by a USports hockey team. The goaltending would be okay. The defence is short on both numbers and experience. As stated at the outset, this list may have left out those half-Ukrainians. If some all-star defencemen are amongst that group, this team would do well against high-level competition. I'd pay to watch them!

Last weekend, the Bisons reversed their results against Regina. This weekend, the Bisons have an opportunity to remedy their record against TWU. Last year and this, most TWU opponents pick up four points each weekend and the Bisons need to be one of them. The goaltending, which looked atrocious in their home pre-season games and against the T-irds, was a strength last weekend. Ross Hawryluk started and won both games and now has a very good stats line (2-1-0, 2.95 GAA, .917 S%). Despite having played just 4 games, the Bisons continue to have three of the top 12 scorers in the CW: Chase Hartje (3-7-10), Brett Davis (4-4-8), and Devon Skoleski (2-6-8). I‛ll be checking the injury front. I believe that last weekend, other than the backup goaltenders, the Bisons had no healthy scratches. Four players have yet to play in the regular season: defenceman Liam Schioler and forwards Geordie Keane, Linden McCorrister, and Eric Fawkes. Jonny Hooker left the Saturday game against UBC with what appeared to be a shoulder/arm injury of some sort. Holy Trinity has been solidly whacked in five of their six games thus far. The exception was an OTL against Sask, where the Spartans blew a 5-1 lead. They have been outscored by 37-13. They lead the league in PIMs with 102 (tied with MRU), whereas the saintly Bisons are tied for last with Regina, at just 38. One big peculiarity in the schedule is that the matinee game is on Friday. That surely makes for difficult travel arrangements. IMO, Alberta is the cream of the crop, TWU is the weakest, and the rest are still to prove themselves. One cannot argue with the Mutts‛ results, but unless they can do well here I would still have them in that murky-middle of CW near-contenders. They did nearly lose to TWU, split with Calgary, and had a tight series with UBC. So far the Dinos are 0-3-0 on Fridays and 3-0-0 on Saturdays. I have a hunch that Regina peaked last year and will be just a notch below this year. To prevent that, a good road weekend against a mid-power like this would help. Regina lost a lot of scoring, but rookie Matt Culling has 4 goals and 3 assists in four games and is a player to watch. The Dinos are led by 2nd year Jake Gricius. Last year he was 2-3-5 for the season, and this year he is 5-1-6 already. The Family Guys have had two splits and are coming off a bye week. Nothing wrong with a split against Regina, and a major celebration for their split with Alberta. They started strong a year ago, then fell apart. The Bluegars were blitzed by the Evil Monkeys on opening weekend, then blitzed Holy Trinity. They are coming off a solid 3-point weekend against the Dinos. Those Mythical Mutants need some points on weekends like this if they intend to stay in playoff contention. I was a bit surprised by the way they controlled the Evil Monkeys. There was a bit of an interruption with all CWTV feeds, so I missed a good chunk of all games. And, with three games starting at the exact same time, I missed more than I saw of the out-of-town games. The 1st period saw them outshoot Bedrock U 12-6 and outscore them 2-1. The Dinos‛ Friday night curse looked to be real at that point. The Dinos gathered steam throughout, outshooting Regina 14-7 in the 2nd period and 18-3 in the 3rd. The paltry three shots in the 3rd period showed that the Cats were not really in this at the end. Spadafora (02:48 3rd) Goal: Man: Hawryluk (32 shots, 30 saves), TWU: Audet (30 shots, 27 saves) First, the Bisons were down one more forward as Devon Skoleski (11 points in 5 games) did not suit up for this one. Defenceman Zach Patrick was moved to a forward spot, and notched his first goal. Dylan Thiessen (6 points in 6 games) was also injured in this game, but did return. I have to credit Holy Trinity. This was their best game of the season by far. It was Alumni Night, so the players maybe wanted to impress their predecessors. The Bisons seemed to want to just let the clock tick down in the 3rd period without suffering any more injuries. They could use the week to recover. #28 Codey Behun and #6 Mitch Dyck fight for the puck with two Spartans. Behun had his first goal of the season.OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS 2 MACEWAN GRIFFINS 3 (in overtime)Links: ➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW ➤ MRU: Cougars Catchup: October 22, 2022 ➤ MacU: Comrie plays double OT hero as Griffins beat No. 9 MRU for first time in Canada West (with boxscore) Quick SummaryMRU: R. They boosted their shot total from 11 to 39. They were a completely different side. It appeared that they may have won the game with a goal in the 4-on-4 segment of OT, but it was waived off. This gives the Mythical Mutants three straight splits, which they must find to be satisfactory. The Bluegars seem to be on the verge of a breakthrough but never quite make it. They are now 4-2-2. The Banjo-Cats were disappointing in this one. They did lose a lot of offence from last year and it seems like they are playing with little confidence right now. Of note Jake Gricius scored his 7th goal in 8 games for the Dinos. This was a pretty good game I had playing in the background whilst trying to watch the Jets, Bisons, MLB playoffs, and CFL. Sask‛s broadcast quality has taken a nosedive this year. At their best, they are a contender and a threat to win a berth in the U-Cup. But just when they seem ready for a breakthrough, they falter. They are blessed with two of the best forwards in the country: Nolan Yaremko (3 goals and 10 assists in 8 games) and Riley Sawchuk (7 goals and 8 assists in 7 games). The Bisons have some lofty stats themselves, with three players in the Top Ten despite having played just six games. Chase Hartje (4-8-12, leads CW defencemen in scoring), Devon Skoleski (4-7-11, in 5 games), and Brett Davis (4-6-10). After last weekend it appears that the Bison defence is fully recovered from injuries. However, they might need to move two of them to the forward lines due to the injuries up front. The Achilles heel in the Bison home games was in goal. That problem has evidently been addressed on the road, where Ross Hawryluk found his form. Hopefully he can keep that going at The Rink, where the Bisons appear for the last time. The linked story is on Tony Apetagon, a kid from a remote northern community getting a chance at a top 6 forward spot on the team. They started with 2 points against MacEwan, then had 1 point against Manitoba, then no points against Calgary. The trend is not good, especially when the Evil Monkeys are coming to town. Regina really needs a split here to stay within shouting distance of playoff contention. MACEWAN GRIFFINS (3-3-0, 4-8-1, OHT35 #25) U.B.C. They have splits in all three series so far, the others being against Regina and MRU. Their wins have been close games, two in overtime. Their losses have been decisive, one by 3 goals and two by 4 goals. So it might be said that they have squeezed maximum points from their performance thus far. I am not sold on UBC‛s goaltending. If one of their newcomers can solidify that position perhaps they could sweep a series like this one. NOTE: Saskatchewan, Trinity Western, and Calgary all have byes because there are 16 weeks to the season and each team needs two bye weeks.OUT EAST Sun Oct 23 Concordia 4 Ontario Tech 5 Wed Oct 26 Guelph 3 Toronto Metro 4 (ot) Wed Oct 26 Ottawa 0 U.Q.T.R. 5 Wed Oct 26 Ontario Tech 6 R.M.C. 1 Thu Oct 27 Brock at Laurier Thu Oct 27 Lakehead at Guelph Fri Oct 28 R.M.C. at Ottawa Fri Oct 28 Lakehead at Waterloo Fri Oct 28 York at Western Ontario Fri Oct 28 Carleton at U.Q.T.R.
