PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- New York Rangers forward Sean Avery says Wayne Simmonds of Philadelphia uttered a homophobic slur at him on the ice. Avery told ESPN.com that Simmonds made the remark during the first period of Philadelphia's 5-3 preseason win over the Rangers on Monday night. ESPN.com reported that a video replay showed Simmonds issuing the epithet toward Avery near the Flyers bench Last week, Simmonds - who is black - was involved in another controversy when someone threw a banana on the ice from the stands as he was taking a shootout attempt during a game in London, Ontario. Simmonds, who says Avery sucker-punched him Monday, didn't deny making the comment when speaking to reporters after the game. Racist or homophobic slurs or actions have no place in sports.
We all know Avery is an a-hole, but Simmonds should not have used those words.

Wrong forum.
Regardless, Avery is a piece of s%$t. He made death threats to Giroux, and called Simmonds the N word during the game... And Simmonds gets the hearing?

Playing devils advocate here, so because Avery is a piece of Crap and has spewed garbage before then what Simmonds said is acceptable?

Playing devils advocate here, so because Avery is a piece of Crap and has spewed garbage before then what Simmonds said is acceptable? Yes, absolutely. What was done to Simmonds was blatantly obvious and witnessed by thousands. Nobody will know for sure what exactly Simmonds said to Avery.. and judging by Avery's ability to be everything but a reasonable human being... I would give Simmonds the benefit of the doubt here.

However, Simmonds has admitted to saying it.
Don't get me wrong, I can't stand Avery, however what Simmonds said may be considered offensive to some

First off wrong board for this discussion.
Secondly a fans actions in front of thousands is not the same thing as two players talking thrash in the heat of a game. Not saying either is acceptable but I'm sure players say innappropraite things on the ice, field , court all the time.

First the video clearly shows what he has said, but the thing is this stuff happens in the heat of a game, people say Crap, they may mean it, they may not, but every time something happens the media always blows it out of proportion, or they stray away from the subject because speaking the truce may not be the politically correct thing to do. This stuff has been going on since sports have been around, what next, a player calls another player a a$$hole and it now appears in the news. Players need to shut there yaps to reporters and handle there business on the ice not in the media.

I'm in no way an Avery fan, in fact I can't stand the guy but a different article tells the story a little different. It seems it wasn't Avery who sought out the media to tell on Simmonds but the media who witnessed it asking Avery to confirm if Simmonds had actually said what they thought he said. The rivalry between the Flyers and Rangers turned ugly in a penalty-filled pre-season game that also appeared to include a homophobic slur from Philadelphia's Wayne Simmonds to noted New York agitator Sean Avery.
The Atlantic Division rivals combined for 77 penalty minutes in Philadelphia's 5-3 victory on Monday night, and more discipline could by coming from the NHL when the league sorts everything out.
Avery and Simmonds were at odds in the first period, and television cameras caught Simmonds jawing at Avery, appearing to utter the slur.
When Avery was asked by reporters after the game if Simmonds called him "what we think he called you," he answered: "Yeah, yeah."
Avery said he had "no idea" why Simmonds would make such a remark.
This marked the second controversy in two weeks for Simmonds, who is black. Last week, a banana was thrown at him from the stands during a pre-season game in London, Ont.
Simmonds didn't deny using the slur toward Avery.
"Honestly, we were going back and forth for a while there," he said, without providing details. "I don't recall everything that I did say to him, but he said to me some things I didn't like. And maybe I said some things that he didn't like.
"I can't recall every single word I said."
Simmonds was asked what Avery said and if it crossed the line.
"I'm not going to rat him out," he said.
Flyers coach Peter Laviolette didn't comment on the exchange. As for what he saw of it, Laviolette said, "It was a couple of guys battling out there."
Rangers coach John Tortorella took the matter a step further.
"I didn't hear it. I don't think Sean Avery is lying," he said. "I'll let the league handle it. I did not hear it, but I'm sure Sean Avery isn't going to lie about it."
