You can clearly see Simmonds call Avery a 'Fnck!ng f@gg0t' on this clip here. ca.sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/Sean-Avery-Wayne-Simmonds-used-homophobic-slur-?urn=nhl-wp13480Personally, I think it's gamesmanship. It's a pretty easy one to lob at Avery considering he's spoken out against homophobia in the past. Almost as easy as calling a black guy a n!gg3r. Stuff between players in the heat of the battle like that gets a pass from me. Emotions are high. Personally, I love Sean Avery. He's one of my favorite players, I even have a Rangers jersey with his name an number on the back. And while he can be a liability at times, his ability to get into the opposition's head and off their game is pretty amazing. You may not agree with his methods, but he's pretty effective. Simmonds is also one of my favorite players. Tough guy, got some decent hands too. He's the closest to Tiger Williams I can think of. Plus with the Winter Classic hype building soon and HBO doing 24/7 again, I wouldn't put it past a media savvy guy like Avery working the press. He was having a pretty friendly discussion on the ice before the game with Simmonds. Simmonds just had a banana chucked at him. Maybe I'm too much of a conspiracy nut, or I've grown up on too much pro wrestling, but something seems convenient about the timing here.

First the video clearly shows what he has said, but the thing is this stuff happens in the heat of a game, people say Crap, they may mean it, they may not, but every time something happens the media always blows it out of proportion, or they stray away from the subject because speaking the truce may not be the politically correct thing to do. This stuff has been going on since sports have been around, what next, a player calls another player a a$$hole and it now appears in the news. Players need to shut there yaps to reporters and handle there business on the ice not in the media. Personally I disagree with your take on guys saying stuff to the press. I'm kind of sick of the old school approach where people look at the coach/management - player relationship as father to son, children are meant to be heard BS. It's crap. They're grown men, making millions, and if having a personality gets a guy an extra endorsement good for him. Guys think about that stuff. It's ultimately a business no matter how much we as fans want to romanticize it. Plus when the reporters get something extra to write about, it builds interest in the game, gets people talking. Takes a September preseason game and makes things interesting. Fans love Swaggerville. Teams wanna knock off Swaggerville. Players put the onus on themselves to perform and either rise up or fail. I think it's great. Anyone else remember violently hating Brett Hull and Jeremy Roenick back in the mid 90s? Wanting them to get their comeuppance in the World Cup, (but it didn't happen) but then being so satisfied at watching them fail horribly at Nagano? I love it.

I wonder what the context under which Avery said this was, did he proactively hound a reporter to say it like he did in the Cuthbert/Phaneuf thing or did a reporter just ask what was said and he anwsered the question?
I think majority of people (including myself) have been called a that in an intense game where trash talk comes into play. Its kind of an akward scenario, is it right to call an opposing black player a n!gger? Absolutely not, is it ok to call an opposing player white or black a f ag? No, you dont know that person's orientation but the problem goes beyond that, by using that as an insult your further promoting the notion that homosexual people are wrong or inferior.
But lets be honest, as I alluded to before I bet majority players including Avery have called someone that at some point.
Listen to the song Make it stop by Rise Against, there my favourite band (AND THERE HERE NEXT WEEK!!!!!) but the song is about LGBT rights and was inspired by suicides by LGBT teens.

So this what we needed those 60 camera angles for in the arena, so we could now read players lips. What next a closed caption box on the TV with someone interpreting what the players are saying on the ice. We Americanized and sensationalized this game so much it makes me sick. GET BACK TO HOCKEY!

I wonder what was said to each other back in the early/mid 70's? You know back when hockey was more civilized? lol

Avery one of the biggest chirpers in the NHL squealing on another player for yapping on the ice. This clown continues to embarrass the NHL and NHLPA.
What Simmonds said is not acceptable, but to single out one guy of 800 isn't acceptable either. Every player on the ice yaps to some degree, the NHL has to decide what their stance is. There are mics all over the ice surface at every game, I'm sure the NHL can hear nearly everything that goes on and they do nothing until they are forced to.

Avery does the same thing guy like Claude Lemieux, Dave Lumley, Craig MacTavish, Garth Butcher used to do, but with todays media you are more informed of what really transpired, because of the 60 plus camera angles and the high powered microphones.
