Cap Situation Around the NHL - Early Free Agency Frenzy Edition:
As we are all continuing to wonder where or if Connor Hellebuyck or Mark Scheifele will be traded this off-season, thought I would take a look at the salary cap situation around the NHL after the initial free agency period has lapsed.
At this point, here is the list of available cap space, from most to least. This includes the number of players currently counting against the cap (players signed), the amount of unsigned restricted free agents, and empty slots in a standard NHL roster (23 players). If a team is up against the cap, the roster is cut down to the minimum of 13F/7D/2G (22 players). It assumes that the RFAs will be signed, so team needs are above and beyond those signings. Also, if a team "needs nothing" that doesn't mean that they don't have a desire to improve certain positions, all it means is they have a body for each of the forward, defense, & goalie slots on a standard NHL roster.
ANAHEIM: $29,873,333 w/ 17 players signed, 4 RFAs unsigned, and need another F/D
CHICAGO: $17,965,710 w/ 19 players signed, 1 RFA unsigned, and need another 3D

This includes 7 teams using LTIR contracts to go above the salary cap limit and are used in the numbers provided above (i.e. Colorado would have negative cap space if the LTIR wasn't considered):
Philadelphia: 2 players @ $12.125M
Montreal: 1 player @ $10.5M
Colorado: 1 player @ $7M
Tampa Bay: 1 player @ $6.875M
Vancouver: 1 player @ $5.75M
Toronto: 1 player @ $5.625M
Vegas: 1 player @ $5M
Calgary: 1 player @ $2.5M
**Arizona also has $18M in LTIR contracts but since they are no where near the cap ceiling, haven't included them in the $16M plus space they have.**
