Cheveldayoff comes off with a poor ranking for reasons we all know about: "15. Class of 2011 GMs: Kevin Cheveldayoff (WPG) I’m not sure which is stranger, that 2011 only features one new GM or that that guy is still on the job today. Longevity is tough to manage for an NHL GM, so we have to give Cheveldayoff credit for sticking around. But he’s only won three rounds, and has managed the current version of the team into a tough spot. Far worse, for our purposes: In a league where GMs are famously risk averse when it comes to pulling off deals, Cheveldayoff still managed to become the guy who stood out for never making trades. He’s shaken that reputation in recent years, but we’re grading his entire body of work here. Impact: 5/10. Success: 4/10. Entertainment: 2/10. Total: 11/30." theathletic.com/4681539/2023/07/12/nhl-general-manager-ranking-salary-cap/

I don't have a subscription to The Athletic, so can't read the article to compare Chevy's ratings to other GMs, but the overall rating seems a bit harsh. Don't get me wrong, I want Chevy gone as he is well beyond his best before date, but he has done some good things in the toughest market in the NHL.
His job has also been made worse by an owner who is too involved in making team decisions - not sure if it's bad luck or if I'm just drawn to teams with that, since I'm also a Dallas Cowboys fan. Guess we can consider ourselves fortunate that Chipman hasn't made himself GM yet.
I wonder what Cheveldayoff's rating would have been in 2018-19 because he did a decent job at a slow draft & develop rebuild until that point.....after that, his ratings have certainly plummeted to the earth due to all the issues with the team and his making the wrong choices (i.e. keeping Wheeler/Maurice too long). Like a bad house guest, Chevy has overstayed his welcome.
I think he ran a pretty good drafting team overall, with the criticism that the Jets probably took too many shots at small offensive players in the 1st round than necessary. He has also made some pretty good trades, but the reality is that he seems to only go that route when he is absolutely forced to, which isn't exactly strong team management. Good in a couple areas, but lacking in others probably means that he makes a pretty good Assistant GM, so maybe that ranking is more accurate that I initially thought.

Not officially, of course, but there’s about a six-week stretch where we don’t get much in the way of big signings or trades. It’s almost like the GMs all go on vacation. Great, that makes this a perfect time to rank them.

The Athletic is pretty protective of its content: " forbids users from providing “access to content behind a paywall in any way, including re-hosting content on other sites or posting content in text posts/comments.”

Don't think we need anyone else to tell us how good or bad Cheveldayoff is. The jury was in some time ago.

On NHL radio's Power Play program this afternoon, Cheveldayoff was given a rating of C-minus.Their prediction is another mediocre season coming up with a teardown to the foundation the following year.
