We have seen this before with Hellesuyck. That is why no other team wanted him. How do you know that know one else wanted him? Oh, by reading the media reports on both Scheif and HelleSUYCK, no team wanted to trade value because they know he is not the goalie the Jets THINK he is. Make Bross the #1 and sit HelleSUYCK!

What did we learn about the Vegas cup win? You don't need an 8.x million dollar goaltender especially if you have other horses and a system which everyone buys into. The Jets had selfish players the last few years and by the verbal diarrhea certain players fulminated at the end of the season last year (including Helle)it was clear they were ready to hang the coach out to dry. Zip ahead to this ridiculous signing of long term contracts to players who are entering into their post productive years. It's funny how the GM comes out of his cave and meets the press only when he thinks the heat is off so he doesn't have to deal with the hard questions. Were teams waiting for a definite value to be proscribed to these two before committing to a value trade? Why trade at the deadline if you have no guarantee they will stick around? You're less inclined to give value without that assurance. The contract with both has the usual restrictions on trade thus narrowing the scope of potential teams. These are questions which are relevant. But I'm more inclined to believe that Scheif was presented with the options by his agent and chose the safest route because he didn't like what he was hearing. This GM was left with fewer options because he overstayed Scheif to the detriment of the organization. Helle I'm not really uptight about. At least it is apparent that his value has now been reduced to the 8's not 9's which he likely believed he was worth. As noted above this might be the trigger for other teams to invest in him. Vegas gets away with no needing an elite goalie because they have elite level defenceman. That is their strength. Our D is no where near that level so 37 has to take a lot of high quality and screened shots.

Just watched the highlights(?). Hellebuyck had the one poor goal, and it sure looked like 88 was on for a lot of horror. Must say 55 looked pretty good That was my take too, if anyone wants to read my other thoughts they can check out my Game Recap on Arctic Ice Hockey. If Winnipeg plays the majority of its games like that, they will win more than they lose. Here's the MoneyPuck stats for the game: Winnipeg 74.2% on the Deserve-To-Win meter
3.44 to 2.66 advantage in total expected goals
Dominance at 5 on 5 with 2.95 to 0.70 expected goals at even strength

Our D is no where near that level so 37 has to take a lot of high quality and screened shots. This is something that always seems to be overlooked when discussing the value of goalies. A team with an elite defensive core doesn't need to play a strict defensive system (like Bowness') just to be in the top 10 in lowest goals allowed. That makes their offenses better, allowing them to overcome less than elite goaltending on their way to a Cup. Unrelated odd stat about Hellebuyck that I read today, he's only had 2 opening night games with a save percentage greater than .900 (out of 8). So guess we can expect that he will sort things out like he has in the past.

Positives: Vilardi looks really good with Scheif and Connor Iafallo might be the biggest steal of the trade With a little more time together the 3rd and 4th lines will be solid. Negatives: Kupari needs to work on his defensive and physical play Perfetti has a long way to go to be a second line centre. After he got crushed a couple times he disappeared.
Overall I think this is a better team than last year but still needs some muscle.
It's just the first game so some players may have gotten a wake up call that they need to step it up.
A side note: I really worry that Ehlers is nearing a point where he is injured too often and his career may start a slide that he can't recover from. I'm a big fan but something isn't right with him. Just my own observation and opinion.

If I were coaching I would start Brossoit on Saturday. 1) Because he deserves it 2) To get Hellebuyck's attention right away
With these two goalies, I think there should be a way better balance than in the past. Brossoit showed Winnipeg how good he can be in the 1st round last year.

A downside of Helle's new, ridiculously long contract is going to be more scrutiny over time. Anytime he gets outplayed by a guy that makes less money, in some cases, much less money, it will be noticed, and discussed.
In seasons to come, as Helle begins the inevitable age decline, it'll be a talking point.
Hellebuyck has been well paid, maybe a little underpaid. Going forward, he'll get into the pressure zone of being one of the highest paid players on the team.
Too much term in my mind.

Interesting what the Canucks did to the Oilers. There's a team that needs a goaltender. Badly.

I think if you're 30+ it should be 5 years max. One or both of these contracts are gonna bite us in the butt

Interesting what the Canucks did to the Oilers. There's a team that needs a goaltender. Badly. Yes, Chevy should approach Helle and ask him if he would consent to a trade to the Oilers, I bet he jumps at the opportunity. Not sure if the Oilers would give up much in return to us though.

Thinking that Brossoit should get 25 - 27 starts this season, keeping Helly down around 55 starts for the season will keep him fresh for the playoffs as opposed to being burned out by the time the playoffs start, you can see in the playoffs last year that Helly wasn’t as sharp as he was during the regular season. Just my thoughts👍.
