There are various ways that the history aspect could be handled.
Regarding the Coyotes: the better question is why wouldn't they give the history back? They have very little use for it and "they" are in fact the NHL which owns is the Coyotes. I can tell you the fan base in PHX to the extent it exist couldn't care less about the Jets, Hawerchuk, Hull or Steen (assuming they even know who those players were).
The issue I believe in part at least is how badly TNSE, i.e., Chipman, want that history back. If you think about how much it appeared he wanted the Jets name, I would suggest it is possible he has a similar attitude towards the original Jets history in general. That's speculation to a point but also based on several comments I heard him make.

I am sure it bugs him that True North does not 'officially' own the original NHL Jets records. They own everything else though - name and old logos.

I believe he will try all he can to get the history back, just to, how shall I say this, 'complete the set' regarding the old Jets (history, name, logos etc).

I got a very different impression from an interview he did. I think it was on FAN590. My impression was that he thought it wasn't right to try to tie the history together, although he did mention that the Jets may not recognize the Thrasher part of their history (i.e., they haven't decided). I really believe TNSE is almost making this up as they go along. There are many ways to handle this. It is also easy to make different outcomes become 'inevitable' when you are the owner of the franchise. I could write a lot about this, but suffice to say if you pay $170MM for an NHL franchise including $60MM as a unprecedented 'relocation fee' to the NHL, you should be able to negotiate a lot of different things, especially if they cost the NHL next to nothing...as would be the case with the Jets records...

Well, the NHL did give back the name and old logos for 'free', however, the historical stats thing - who knows. I suppose when the final fate of the Coyotes is determined maybe we will have a better idea.

I guess that's what they're hoping for, to kinda reveal nothing to us. And yes, I believe that if they want to get the Jets history, they will. PS. Just a random thought, but do you think that $60MM has just kept the Yotes in Glendale for another few years?

They are still on life support as they've been since 2009.
