Thing is, when they asked about Montoya, he said they'd be considering all of their options. So why not say something similar about Pavs? I guess maybe because Pavs is under contract while Montoya is a FA. Anyway. I'm sure Maurice is having some input in that. This is all posturing. He's playing his cards right. Re: Montoya "considering all our options" = "We don't need you Monty, if you want to stay here, you need to sign on our terms." The power is with Chevy. Re: Pavs "number one goaltender going into next season" = "This guy has value. If you want to take him from us, it will cost you." The power is with Chevy. He's just playing the game the way it needs to be played. Not really. Other GMs know he's our "best" candidate for the compliance buyout so why would you give up anything of substance? Even a trade where the Jets keep 50% of his salary wouldn't be appealing, because you'd still have to give something up. Trade for him? Assets + Minimum $1.95M cap hit per year for another 3 years for a mediocre goaltender Let the Jets buy him out? Keep ALL assets + possibility you can sign him for less/not as long (or both!)

I have to agree with what most of you are saying. Chevy could not have answered that question any differently even if it was his plan to get rid of Pavelec via trade/ buy out etc...
Any response different than this would've led to more rumours/ speculation and would've devalued Pav's stock.

Have a look at exactly what Chevy said: "Yes. Ondrej Pavelec is the number one goaltender going into next season." -Cheveldayoff Even if Chevy trades or buys-out Pavs tomorrow, what he said is completely true. Lots of wiggle room there. Had he said: "Ondrej Pavelec will be our #1 goalie next season", that would have been a bit more definative. Besides, what GM would trade for Pavs, knowing they could get him on the open market after a buy-out? And yes, Pavs would have some trade value, especially if Winnipeg excepts some salary in a trade (like with Loungo to Florida). It could be cheaper and better than a buy-out. Well said. The only thing Chevy could have said that might have earned some of semi-hostile comments on here would have been, "I can definitively tell you that we will not buy out or trade Ondrej for the next two seasons." Clearly, he didn't say that. Pav's is our starting goalie right now and going forward. In a day, week, month, or year, he may not be.

and if Chevy said "Ondrej Pavelec is to a number one goaltender as James Wright is to 50 goal score" would that made some of you more happy!

On one hand I understand making the statement because what else is he going to say that won't open the speculation floodgates? On the other hand... why be so definitive? Things have move valuable when you pretend that you need them. I get what your saying and if the Jets move him than your right (and I'm happy) but I don't think that is the case here at all. I would be shocked if Pavs gets traded this summer, I think Chevy meant exactly what he said and couldn't agree more with Hannu that it would be nice to see the Jets not be SO steadfast in declaring Pavs our #1 guy.

Buying out Pavelec would have definitely made me happy. I would have kinda wished he wasn't so mean about it, but I still would have been happy if Chevy announced a Pavelec buyout. I knew in my mind he'd be our starter next year, but it's still depressing to hear, especially when it's so clearly spelled out.

This team was 4 more wins away from the playoffs. With the coaching change, Buff off the blueline, Scheifele and Trouba being 1 yr old, I don't really care about Pav anymore
This team will win in spite of his poor goaltending and make the playoffs. A change in net will come in due time.

If he wants to get value for him have to talk him up. Can't say he's number two and by the way we want to trade him.

Chevy will try to upgrade this position, time will tell whether or not there is a deal that makes sense for the Jets. How did you want to handle the question like the Canucks did?

Do you honestly believe though that the Jets are even actively trying to trade him? Let alone that they could? Wish I could say yes to either question. It's not the end of the world, and I agree if the team makes strides forwards we can make the playoffs next year with Pavs in net. But everyone still agrees he's the weak link - why would we not just get rid of him?

There is always the option of buying him out or putting him on waivers, provided you do have someone to replace him.
