On one hand I understand making the statement because what else is he going to say that won't open the speculation floodgates? On the other hand... why be so definitive?

Please don't become a GM or a poker player!

now did Chevey say that Pavs was going to be the #1 goalie heading into camp, or did he say that he was the #1 goalie going into the off-season?
i think that makes a difference. but also think regardless of what was said, that in the end, it wont matter. semantics.

Obviously. If the Jets fail to make any changes in goal this off-season then you don't want to have a Luongo type situation with your goalie.

Good news is we might draft even higher next year!

Have a look at exactly what Chevy said:
"Yes. Ondrej Pavelec is the number one goaltender going into next season." -Cheveldayoff
Even if Chevy trades or buys-out Pavs tomorrow, what he said is completely true. Lots of wiggle room there. Had he said: "Ondrej Pavelec will be our #1 goalie next season", that would have been a bit more definative.
Besides, what GM would trade for Pavs, knowing they could get him on the open market after a buy-out?
And yes, Pavs would have some trade value, especially if Winnipeg excepts some salary in a trade (like with Loungo to Florida). It could be cheaper and better than a buy-out.

Salary retention cap is 50%, you could argue Pavelec isn't even worth $2M per year.

Thing is, when they asked about Montoya, he said they'd be considering all of their options. So why not say something similar about Pavs? I guess maybe because Pavs is under contract while Montoya is a FA. Anyway. I'm sure Maurice is having some input in that.

first let me say I wanted Pavelec gone too, However Chevy did say going into next season. Just as the team couldn't turn the corner with Noel, the same goes for Pavelec, if he does indeed start the season at #1, he won't stay there if his play doesn't warrant it, and no they won't wait until mid season as with Noel. Buying out doesn't make his salary go away, the Jets are still stuck with millions for someone not with the team.
Calm down and wait, Pavelec will NOT be allowed to be the anchor that drags the team down next season,

I'm assuming Chevy is a smart man, you know, since he's a GM of an NHL team. I would hope he knows/realizes/believes Pavelec is not the goalie the Jets need to move forward. He always talks about moving forward instead of backwards (reason why he fired Noel) but yet, this is not a step forward.

Re: Montoya "considering all our options" = "We don't need you Monty, if you want to stay here, you need to sign on our terms." The power is with Chevy. Re: Pavs "number one goaltender going into next season" = "This guy has value. If you want to take him from us, it will cost you." The power is with Chevy. He's just playing the game the way it needs to be played.

Only if he's bought out by the compliance buyout deadline this summer. I think that's what he was referring to. Like if they stick with him and he's no better next year (which is pretty much a given) they've essentially stuck themselves with him.
