My points of the scoreboard are valid. It is easily the worst scoreboard in the NHL. And it's not even close. PERIOD PERIOD........ The sound system is amazingly awful. I was sitting in the lower bowl for about 15 minutes of gameplay and I thought it wasn't even turned on. I was sitting next to George Stromboloupolas from CBC and a lady next to him informed us they had problems in preseason. That makes sense cause there is no way a NHL team should have that weak of sound system. I was also up in the press box for part of the game and if I was way on one side say south side forget it can't hear a thing. The north side I could hear good part of what the PA guy was saying. you said the scoreboard was the worst in ALL OF PROFESSIONAL SPORTS. Not the worst in the NHL. The comment was absolutely assinine. There are 30 arenas in the NHL. There are thousands of professional scoreboards in the world. The two comments are no where near equivalent. But I've fed you enough

Well, the scoreboard is the last thing I care about. They could have an old school MLG analog arms style scoreboard with "HOME" and "VISITOR" and it wouldn't make a difference to me, I'm there for the hockey. Replays are nice but I don't need 'em in high def.

I have to agree on the scoreboard. I have Centre Ice and see all the arena's and we are behind. I don't know how the Coaches and players can make out how much time is left in a penalty, it's so small and when you have to look fast it's hard to pick up.

This isn't trolling. It's a well-thought out post that shares his thoughts on his experience, and he sounds like he's got a fairly solid foundation of experience from which he can speak intelligently on the matter. That the MTS Centre is small is no secret. I found the congestion in the concourses to be intolerable during the intermission of sold-out Moose games so he's not exactly revealing state secrets with that note. I was interested to hear about the press box and media room though. That's one area I was hoping was second-to none. I want the media to look forward to coming to Winnipeg for their teams' road trips, not dreading sub-standard accommodations and facilities. Thanks for posting your informed and arms-length take. I'll watch with keen interest to see how TN deals with these issues in the future. m. I have to agree! Very good post. I agree with you on most points. The RR tribute needed to be done. It of course was well beyond True North's control when the this happened and they needed to show there respect at the first chance they had. Bad timing yes, brings down the crowd right from the start. Could they have done this at the 1st intermission, I guess, but it had to be done at the home opener. My only complaint for the whole day was the sound system. This has to be upgraded and I am willing to bet True North knows this. They had a million things on there plate to deal with before the puck dropped. This one could wait until next season. As for Jets 1.0, I think there is really BIG plans for this in the near future but October 9th, 2011 was about a new day, a new team, a new era of Winnipeg Jets hockey in Winnipeg. Hull, Hawerchuk, Steen, Selanne, etc will have there day coming. I'm glad you enjoyed downtown. Over the next few years around the arena will not look the same as it did last weekend. Lots of construction about to start around the arena thanks to True North.

I am not sure why this has come up again. The Jets will be honoring past players.
Am I the only one that saw the 8 minute video prior to the game that showed the signing of Bobby Hull, move to NHL, Hawerchuck drafted, Ellett OT goal, jets departure, moose, building of MTS Centre etc etc?? Is that not enough? After all they have TV schedules to keep.
I believe they used air raid sirens during the introduction, personally I couldn't care less right now what the entry song is, you can't hear it over the crown anyway. I could not hear the anthem singers at all as the crowd drwoned them out and when I watched the game later I am glad about that.
I heard the PA system was bad in the upper bowl, but aside from the usual Wheeler mumbling, I could hear the PA announcer and everything else
I would imagine the press box still needs some tweaks as do other areas of the arena. People have to remember that they didn't have a whole lot of time to get things ready, plus they had several events at MTS this past summer which stopped all work.
Give it some time

The one thing I give MTS Centre props for is even though the media room is tiny, press box is a mess. They go all out in making sure all the amenities are top notch. It's amazing visiting places like Air Canada Centre, United Centre (this Thur), even MSG in new york that the smallest things could get in the way such as lack of plugs, lighting, internet hookup, even things like a desk, or access to publications(media guide-notices,etc)
I was speaking to someone before the game about a possible expansion if they can take out the 2 roads along the concourses. Apparently it was part of the initial construction plans but it never got the 'GO' from the city. I believe once more people come into the MTSC this will get done.

Another thing about the part of the concourse where Tim Hortons is, I thought it would be a great idea to add a massive style pub, sports lounge in that area that goes over to the shopping complex beside the MTSC(imagine just keeping the road but it connects over top) and I was told that TNSE tried to get access to that building but it's owned by the public insurance company.
I'm sorry Moxies is a bit too small and the wait time apparently is out of control for pre-post game fun. Even the Budweiser King lounge is a wonderful idea albeit smaller than what it should be intended for.
Many arenas like in Miami, San Jose, and Vancouver have a pub style lounge that is not only for the fans but for television shows, and a good setting for the radio/tv game programming.

I do actually somewhat agree with most things here. To me the biggest issues are:
1) The railing (putting in plexiglass, which we all know is in the cards) 2) Should have made a bigger spectacle out of the opening ceremony. And I agree, honouring a few past Jets would make sense. It doesn't take away from the current Jets, and links to the biggest news story, the RETURN of the Jets. We're not an expansion franchise!
3) I agree that a Jet goal sound and simply more noise (potentially an organ) would be awesome.
Much of this is stuff that as the OP points out, may just take some time. Concessions are already in the midst of being updated, so I won't complain until they are a little more "done". But in my opinion, I do agree that the whole opening ceremony could have been a lot bigger, and that we need something a little more personal when the Jets score as far as sounds go.
The fans built the atmostphere and that's good, but I certainly have to at least partially agree that the whole production could have been bigger.

I don't think TNSE have the right people in place. I heard Gary Lawless on my radio suggest TNSE did an amazing job.
uh no they did not gary ' and I have troubles with Gary Lawless because he conducts himself as trying to dictate how the Jets 2.0 are soppose to run. In regards to the name, and whiteout, etc. And it's all part that he never was a WInnipeger when the original Jets played in Winnipeg.
Concessions, and construction should not have anything to do with gameday production because the production people have one job to do. GAME DAY PRODUCTION! And they failed after game 1.
I'm going to be in Chicago tomorrow, and I can guarentee you it will be amazing and you will see the difference from your home television or radio.

But give TNSE a break. They had to accomplish so much in a very short time period. I am sure they are aware of the challenges and potential needed changes and will deal with those. I don't think we'll see an updated scoreboard this year but I would expect an upgrade soon.
