That's not quite true, it's the same as between the NHL and AHL. teams sign a term agreement to be affiliated with the MLB club. So yes when an affiliation runs out, the MLB team can choose to move the affiliation to another city. The Expos moved the AAA affiliation from Buffalo to Winnipeg in mid season 1970 and then in 1972 moved the affiliate to Peninsula. So it all comes down to the contract they have in regard to length of affiliation and right to break the contract if certain terms are breached. In early 1970 Buffalo was dead last in International league attendance, and then Winnipeg has first (in average attendance) for the remainder of the season. The only reason the team moved was that with Winnipeg so far west of the other International league teams Winnipeg/Montreal had to pay the air fare for travelling teams to come to Winnipeg, making the team a money loser despite excellent AAA attendance. Right, but it has to be to another city that has an affiliation with a AAA league... ie: not Winnipeg. The Jays couldn't just randomly put a AAA team here because Winnipeg isn't a member of any of the AAA leagues. A major league team would have the right to move a minor league team to a new city, pending the league's okay. Winnipeg is still too far away from the any affiliated minor league. But theoretical Winnipeg or any city could get an affiliated minor league team if the MLB team wanted it and the league approved of the move. Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton all has AAA teams in the PCL and Ottawa in the IL. but lost them when there major league team decided to move them. being a member of a league does not guarantee that your team will stay if they can not obtain a MLB team that wants it's minor league team in that city.

Shaw Park is an AAA-calibre facility. But AAA baseball begins play at the beginning of April. Do you know what the beginning of April often looks like in Winnipeg?

If that's the case, the Jays never would have re-upped with Vegas the last time around, they were stuck there because there were no other options and Vegas was the only AAA team available. Will have to look further into this...

If I'm correct the Calgary Cannons were snowed out on Opening Day when the franchise first started

If I'm correct the Calgary Cannons were snowed out on Opening Day when the franchise first started The weather in Edmonton or Calgary isn't that much different in April then Winnipeg. I would imagine when they played AAA baseball there the first 2 weeks or more was on the road.

The Winnipeg Goldeyes had another successful season at the gate to go along with their American Association championship. Fans of the Fish packed Shaw Park at a league-leading rate with an average attendance of 5,705. The Goldeyes also finished second overall in average attendance among 49 independent professional baseball teams. Only the expansion Sugar Land Skeeters of the Atlantic League in their brand new ballpark drew more fans per game than the Goldeyes. "Once again we continue to be supported by the best fans in minor league baseball," Goldeyes GM Andrew Collier said in a statement released by the team. "The American Association has 12 other strong franchises. To lead the league in attendance again is an accomplishment everyone in Winnipeg can celebrate." www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/Goldeyes-garner-good-season-at-the-gate-this-year-171400301.html

^ Winnipeg is an awesome sports city. Everything ive heard or seen points to Winnipeg being the most supportive of their teams in Canada. Just imagine the success the city would have if it was the size of Toronto, could prolly bring in the MLB or NBA

I love baseball. Played it as a kid, spent many an afternoon relaxing watching the Jays or Expos play on TV. Been to games at SkyDome, Metrodome, and Chase Field in Phoenix. I've even been to a couple Goldeyes games. But not one since Sam Katz became mayor of Winnipeg.
I will never give another of my hard-earned dollars to the Goldeyes while he owns that team. He's the greasiest, most transparent and self-righteous politician one could imagine. This latest bit with his close pal Phil Sheegl (not to mention the fire hall fiasco with another close pal Sandy Shindleman) is just over the top. Even his own cabinet members are beginning to distance themselves from him.
I'm proud that The Goldeyes won the AA Champoinship this year but am equally embarrassed by their ownership. Credit Mr Collier for doing a brilliant job, as he always does.
