No kidding. At least Quebec will get a team. South Ontario won't happen pathetically. The Leafs help fund the sun belt experiment big time as a reward Bettman won't put a 2nd team in Ontario. Um that would be a third team in Ontario, and a 3rd team would not hurt the leaf one bit! You know what I meant No a 2nd team wouldn't hurt the Leafs but it's still another arena to compete for concerts. MLSE likes their 100% monopoly on everything. There's also the risk people buy a few less Raptor tickets too with a 2nd arena/another pro team in the area. If Bettman was smart he'd privately guarantee Markham a team sometime in the future if they build the arena. I doubt he will and I think the project will die unfortunately.

Seattle Arena project slowed downThe Seattle Arena project has slowed way down. The City's Department of Planning and Development, which is leading the Environmental Review of the project, confirmed Tuesday that the timetable has been lengthened for the review of the nearly half-billion-dollar proposal. Bryan Stevens, spokesperson for DPD, said in a statement: "Comments on the draft EIS are being reviewed so that they can be responded to within the final EIS document. Additional technical information may also be prepared as needed. With the final EIS expected sometime in March 2014, and Council processes thereafter, a decision on the proposal isn't likely before late summer 2014." The Memorandum of Understanding on the project calls for an EIS to be done, and a team to be acquired, before construction can begin. Chris Hansen's investment group had previously been looking to finish the EIS by earlier this fall. That timeline was laid out as the team looked to close a deal for the NBA's Sacramento Kings franchise. NBA Owners ultimately voted against the purchase and relocation. The Kings begin their season in Sacramento tomorrow. The Arena issue, and location, has been a topic in the Seattle Mayor's Race. Incumbent Mike McGinn championed the deal, and continues to call it a good investment for the city. He says he's recently spoken with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman about hosting a team in the city. His challenger, Ed Murray, said during a KING5 debate he is supportive of the Arena Memorandum of Understanding and is "very thoughtful" legislation www.king5.com/news/local/Seattle-Arena-project-slowed-way-down-229753221.html

^^^LOL This is a very good lession on why you NEVER go into any market in any sport without a 100% guarantee of a new facility. No matter how good things look things can change and stuff can get delayed or fall apart completely.
Overall this isn't really that bad of news for Seattle however. They are taking their time since they need an NBA team 1st before construction starts and it's going to be a couple years until they either get a relocated team like Milwaukee/Sacramento or expansion. Seattle by going slow like this also helps them once law suites come up. They can say look at all the time we took for the EIR. These environmentalist/the port are crazy. We crossed all our T's and dotted all our I's.

so two team expansion seattle and quebec...Possibly staggered? THe nhl should act quickley and dispel any markham rumors. They are very open about not going to markham, way more open then they are about quebec in which they have never denounced the arena.

The NHL certainly isn't granting Seattle a franchise until work on the new arena has begun.

The NHL certainly isn't granting Seattle a franchise until work on the new arena has begun. Well hansen could lobby for an NHL first plan instead. He still builds the arena attracts an NBA team while the NHL owners are the anchor tenant until the team comes. www.king5.com/sports/Chris-Hansen-Were-waiting-for-the-right-opportunity-234175161.htmlThey would need to amend the arena plan to allow construction for an NHL first plan. if the city board wants an arena bad, they might grant it.

I think the city would do it. The question is whether Hansen would. If he builds the arena and only gets NHL he will lose his shirt on the project.

If he builds the arena and only gets NHL he will lose his shirt on the project. thats true but he might be able to work some contingencies with the nhl, maybe something along the lines of being made whole if he doesnt get an nba team, would the nhl doit? probably not...he could also reserve a right to buy into the franchise...again probably not on that but if he feels that his best option i build the arena first to attract a team..then he might do so

No way the NHL will make him whole. The only way they could go for NHL 1st is if they PRIVATELY get a guarantee they get a team from the NBA but the NBA doesn't want to make it public. For example if the NBA announced today Seattle is 100% getting a team as long as an arena is built people in Seattle would want an expansion team right away as soon as the arena was approved. The NBA can't do that because they have to keep Seattle open for a while in case Sacramento and Milwaukee don't play ball. If Seattle fans started question why don't we get a team the second the arena is approved the NBA would face the choices of saying nothing or saying "be patient were trying to extort public funding in Sacramento and Milwaukee, go without the NBA a while longer". I don't think the NBA would want to say something like that publically. So they could 100% guarantee Hansen a team in private and he could go for NHL first. I think that scenario is why Hansen doesn't 100% rule out NHL 1st but is very iffy on it.

I have a feeling he is basically guaranteed a team the nba just hasnt given him a time table, though he cant wait to long to act on the arena either which makes the nhl a failsafe....the nhl also has the option going west to wait on expansion out west
they could expand to quebec first thats a guarantee and watch the seattle situation if it all breaks down maybe portland or find another western city.

I think he's guaranteed a team unless he ever pulls another stunt like he did in Sacramento(funding the anti-arena effort). If this arena passes and he does indeed have an NBA guarantee privately I think next fall the NHL will announce a 2 team staggered expansion with Quebec beginning in 2015, Seattle in 2017.
