Amazing all the BS about population and GDP and no simple hockey fan logic. If you followed this morons theory Phoenix should be sold out every night and Winnipeg struggling to sell tickets.

^ That was the NHL's logic for leaving Quebec and Winnipeg and putting teams in Atlanta and Phoenix in the first place.

You'd think they could AT LEAST acknowledge that some cities have 2 or more pro sports teams. That kind of makes a big difference no? But yeah, hockey fans don't matter just general population!

Guys like this can express their freedom of speech and have an opinion, however, they must also be held accountable for these loose opinions when they are so clearly wrong. The unmeasurable statistic that matters is the size of the hockey market and that is all that matters. We have proved that and now this guys credibility for anything business related to sports has gone out the proverbial window.

I was told that Chipman recently purchased a minor league team. I believe I was told it was the Kootenai Ice and they will be playing in Winnipeg next season. There was alcohol involved and it was a few weeks ago so I'm not 100% sure on the team. I could see them calling them the Moose again. I was also told the Ice Caps are still scheduled to go to Thunder Bay once our arena is built, prob 2 - 3 years away. I'm curious to see if any of this is true but he's a good source.

I hope the news about the junior team is correct but have serious doubt.s as for moving the Ice Caps, I'd say that's 99% false, with sold out arenas in St, Johns it;s not going to happen plus I believe the part owner of the Caps Danny Williams has an option to buy out True North in a few years. TB for the Jets ECHL affiliation, now that I could see.

Hmm...would you happen to have anything to corroborate this? links? articles? tweets? I just did a quick scan, and it does not appear that either franchise is up for sale or plans on moving. In fact, the last time this topic came up & was asked of Chipman, he confirmed the WHL's concern that they do not want to add another franchise any further east of Brandon WITHOUT compensating the other teams for travel expenses. Now, things may have changed recently, but I can't seem to find anything out there that alludes to Chipman having already purchase an existing franchise and definitely no mention of moving the Ice Caps. Its actually a booming success out East as AHL franchises go.

Yea becasue TNSE is going to move thier AHL team from a market that is sold out every night with a huge waiting list on season tickets just like the jets, to Thunder Bay that has never proven it can/will support an AHL team.

I can't see TNSE pulling a team away from a supportive community, in terms of ethics or business reasons.

I understand and I have my doubts also. I was told about the Ice Caps when the Jets were acquired. My source is very much in the know but I can't say who. I asked our mayor about this and he said that yes there have been talks for when our arena is built. The site was only recently decided on with the next step to secure funding which I'm sure will take time. I recall Chipman signing the Ice Caps to 3 years in St John & then I believe they added another year back in the summer. I think Dt Johns is hockey mad and agree its a great place to have the team. If there is any truth to moving them to TBay my guess is it would be purely logistics. Take it for what it's worth people but I could see Chipman bringing in the WHL to fill the void for people who can't afford the NHL. I too checked the web for news and have not found anything about Chipman buying a minor league team but Mark is a very behind the scenes type guy. My memory about what team I'd foggy as it was over holiday cocktails

Funny you sound like the other NHL markets when they spoke about Winnipeg not being able to support a team Thunder Bay has never had a team that could bring the excitement that s Jets affiliate would bring.

My point was why the hell would TNSE move a team from one of the best AHL markets, to an unproven market, it just doesnt sound like something TNSE would do.

I know they'll do well in this city....might not sell out like the jets, but at least 5K people for sure! Plus, the price point of the tickets will be a lot more "family-friendly".

I agree, and with a new arena I have no doubt Thunder Bay would support a Jets affiliated team. However, it's the ripping the team out of St John's part that seems hard to believe.
