Just wanted to say "I told you so" I don't believe that at all. I highly doubt it but the only reasoning I could see for this would be if St. Johns found an NHL affiliate a season before the arena in Thunder Bay was constructed. Then maybe for a year, they play in the MTS Centre. There would be no other reason to do this though and I doubt it will happen. I said from the start that I couldn't see TNSE bringing an AHL team to Winnipeg temporarily if the TB Arena isn't ready, as long as St John's is still available. Sure, if St. John's finds a new NHL affiliate, TNSE might need to move the team to Winnipeg for one season if the arena in Thunder Bay is for sure happening, but not ready yet. Otherwise, why wouldn't you just keep a good thing going in St. Johns?

UPDATE "In an email to tbnewswatch.com, Gary Green said the extension of the St. John’s Ice Caps was necessary to accommodate the farm team as they await progress to be made with the proposed events centre. He said the one-year extension is “good news” for all parties. “They still need to be accommodated for the 2016-17 season,” Green wrote. “Their first priority has always been and still is to play in Thunder Bay starting in the 2017-18 season.” www.tbnewswatch.com/news/356989/%27Good-news%27

Just an update, Thunder Bay city councillors had their first look at phase 3 of the event centre proposal. This is basically a proposal from the builders of what the facility will cost. They are guaranteeing a $101.1 million dollar price tag, dependant on timing possibly some unforeseen economic factors. Once city council votes, if it's approved they can then approach Provincial and Federal governments for assistance.
The vote will take place on September 29th, the day before LT's birthday;) Councillors said in no way will they be pressured by it being Mr LT's birthday! Mr LT replied by saying "if you old coots don't vote yes, watch your backs!"

Any chance this increases the chances of Winnipeg getting a WHL team?

I would think once the Caps or Moose or whatever they'll be called are settled long term in Thunder Bay TNSE will look to aquire a WHL team. This is their priority at the moment.
