2011 Thunder Bay: pop 108,400, median family income $78,610 St John's: pop 197.500, median family income $83,020
Why would the Jets move a successful franchise to a city with half the population and a lower family income?
At an average attendance of approx 6,200 it's 3% of St John's population, Thunder Bay would need a 6% commitment. (Winnipeg for example has a population / attendance of 2% with a lower family income of $74,020. High population numbers will compensate for disposable income by sheer dollars available in the local economy.)
Sorry, basic economics says no, Thunder Bay is not viable.

This contact of mine was asked from NHL players what's with TBay because their investors were telling them to invest in building supply companies in TBay because of the expected mining boom. Expected mining boom??? Saskatchewan's mining boom (potash) is in full throttle right now (not to mention the oil boom), with Saskatoon being one of the fastest growing cities in Canada since 2008. With the area approaching 300,000 people, it would be no contest at all. Winnipeg would easily choose a thriving city like Saskatoon, over a declining city like Thunder Bay. No offense, I'm sure you love your home city, but realistically, Thunder Bay just does not have the market to sustain an AHL club.

Look at the AHL Abbotsford Heat. The Abbotsford CMA is larger than Thunder Bay, has more disposable income, a very large population base, immediately outside the city, and a better arena, yet they can't even average 4,000 fans per game. The AHL in T-Bay would never work. If the Canucks farm team was in Abbotsford, it would be sold out every night.

It just baffles my mind why an Alberta team chose the Lower Mainland BC to house their farm club. That is in the heart of Canucks territory.

I thought the issue with Abbotsford was the wrong parent club and they sold out for Moose games when it was the Canucks affiliate. I'd love to see our affiliate in Saskatoon but I'm happy to have it in a great town like St John's.

I've never been able to understand why they placed the Calgary Flames affiliate in Lower Mainland BC.

this says it all for me... ...while I have no concrete evidence or inside info to support such a theory...I'll believe it when I see a new rink in Thunder Bay!

I was born in Thunder Bay, lived in other NW Ont towns then back to TBay then Winnipeg for 14 years and loved it. Back in TBay due to work and not a huge fan after being in the Peg. Love the city and the people of Winnipeg but I've got to say have no use for half the low lifes on this site that bash anything and everything just because they obviously have zero life. I post things for informational purposes and for those that appreciate it I will continue to post or respond. The rest I just have no use for you.
I never once claimed Thunder Bay was the absolute best option but Mr Chipman obviously likes it so why don't you send him a note telling him how you feel. I just don't get the bashing. It was once Phoenix now it's everything that you aren't completely on board with. It's ok to disagree it's the way it's done. For those that question the possible mining explosion, we live on rock Sherlock there's a reason mining companies are here. & exploring.
I've said it before and I will say it again, grow the hell up and get a life!

The forum members who are in disagreement with you, are doing so because you are basing your opinion on emotion, without any facts to back up that a team in Thunder Bay would be a success. Most people on the forum seem to prefer Saskatoon as our AHL city over Thunder Bay (if the Ice Caps move), for various reasons. Why we need to "grow up" because of that, is beyond my understanding.

I have no emotion towards this issue at all that's my point. Ya it would be nice to see the team in TBay so I could watch our prospects.
It's the issue of many who just love to attack other cities. I guess they are superior now for some reason now that they have the Jets back.

I have no emotion towards this issue at all that's my point. Come on. You go on about being born and raised from Thunder Bay, and expect us to believe you have absolutely no emotional interest in this? Like most people here, I certainly had an emotional bias for Winnipeg's return to the NHL. It's human nature. It's more or less common sense, than it is people attacking your hometown. Personally, I would love to see Thunder Bay acquire an AHL team, but I just do not believe that will happen due to: 1. No adequate arena in region, or being built or even planned. 2. Relatively small population base 3. No local owner has ever stepped forward to try and lure an AHL team to the region 4. No AHL,ECHL, or OHL hockey history 5. Other cities with over twice the population (Saskatoon being the best example), that have a large enough arena, a thriving population growth rate, and decades of minor league or junior hockey history, would be ahead of T-Bay for an AHL franchise.

Biff I'm just not a big fan of the people in TBay nor the city itself. When you say friendly Manitoba, it's true. TBay people are not like that. Living in Winnipeg I always knew my neighbours, not in TBay or if you do meet them they keep to themselves. Anyone I meet who have not grown up here say the same. TBay is an ok town, just not my type of town. I love Winnipeg and I get to travel there for business every month which is great.
We had a chance of getting Costco in TBay but city council screwed that up. It's just not my fave place. I'm staying here because I have younger children and being divorced I can't leave them.
So that's the only reason I would like to see this happen, so that I can follow our up & comers. I was talking to one of the parents on my sons hockey team, I told him about us possibly getting the team and he agreed, he said he was just talking to a senior person who is going to build & develop the arena and he was told they are dealing with True North recently and that is the plan.
So to sum it up, I've now heard this from 4 sources. The first being a very NHL & hockey connected person whom I trust very much, the second being our mayor about a year ago, the third being that news paper article and now from someone who knows the builder developer of the arena. There's still no guarantee because they have to come up with the finances to build the arena but I would say our chances are pretty damn good.
