The federal government is set to announce changes this week to the way Canadians can “pick and pay” for cable and satellite channels. It will mean that channel bundle deals now foisted on consumers by companies will be on their way out. Industry Minister James Moore told CTV’s Question Period Sunday that Canadians should have the right to choose their channels on. We don’t think it’s right for Canadians to have to pay for bundled television channels that they don’t watch. We want to unbundle television channels and allow Canadians to pick and pay the specific television channels that they want,” said Moore. www.winnipegsun.com/2013/10/14/consumers-welcome-pick-and-pay-channels

Love this idea. I HATE paying for stations I don't want to see just so I can see those I want. The low-viewership stations best step up their game if they want to keep their viewers. And, I HATE paying for CBC twice.

The Cable companies will find a way to screw us. They'll make sure prices for the popular and semi popular are high enough that will pay as much in most cases. Most of us have some channels we watch on occasion and don't want to lose so we'll pick a few of those and SURPRISE most of us will pay as much as we have.

Prices are monitored by the govt as well, so hikes would need to be approved. I'm not too worried on that front.

Allow me to illustrate the problem with one of the bundles offered by Shaw Direct.
My wife loves 'W Movies'. Weepy lady movies heavy on Renee Zellwegger, Julia Roberts, and Kate Winslet. What bundle has this Estrogen TV Fest?
The "Intense Bundle" of course.
Featuring such lady-pleasing classics as:
MUCH MUCH HD NBA TV SPIKE Sundance TV
And every woman's favourite channel:
FightTV.
Yep, the 24 Hours of 'Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants' channel fits right in, no?

This is good! IMO. Long time coming. I'm paying for about 35 channels I don't want for 4 that i do watch sometimes.

I'm not sure how I feel about it. I hate paying for a bundle as much as the next person but there are reasons for it. I'm pretty sure the networks require a specific payment per channel order. It's why FoxNews is never included in the news bundle since there is an extra cost from the cable provider and the channel is so popular.
I've never been unhappy with my bundle options. You can be sure that at the end of the day, the cable provider won't make less money.
To me this just seems like a pointless thing for government to regulate.

Personally, I've done away with any additional bundles (except the Jets channel). If a series is really that good, it's either syndicated or readily available online (netflix or otherwise ). To each their own. That said, I probably would "pick and play" select channels if they were available at a decent price outside of a bundle.

I like that idea as long it stays between $1-2.00 per channel. I don't want to see $4.00+ just to get a channel. I adde T+E channel for $3.00 but some were cheaper for add ons. I hate having a bundle of 8 channels and only want to watch 3 of them. So silly.

But that's probably exactly what will happen.
If you have two really popular channels in a $10 bundle and four channels you don't want are you really over paying of those two popular channels will be $5 each?

Possible there will be bundle options? ie: keep the status quo (or something similar) but also offer pick & play for those not interested in bundles?
I can't help but think I'd look at the 'pick & play' and realize there is one specific show I occasionally like to watch on 10 different channels, plus TSN (& TSN2), Sportsnet (and all it's variants - West, SN1, SN Ontario, etc), etc... and next thing I know, I'm paying *more* than I used to.

So since there is no over the air channels anymore I assume that US networks are considered cable?
So if I purchase say NBC or whatever network is showing the Superbowl that year then I should be able to watch that channel and not CTV or Global
Is that correct? Or do the Canadian networks still get to black out the US network if showing the same program at the same time
