Seems everytime a celebrity or whatever makes comments like this the exact same argument breaks out. If we're going to start threads everytime someone says something controversial can we have a thread without the same things repeated everytime? If we're going to have this debate please come up with something original and intelligent, regardless on what you think.

The only thing worse than hating gays is believing in God. So he's two for two in my books

Seriously, I've never watched the show, thought it was kind of dumb, but with all the media swirl, I've looked into them a bit, and I like them!!! I might even buy Phil Robertson's book: "Happy, Happy, Happy" very interesting character!

Sermons are on YouTube.
What disappoints me is there is not a freedom of expression issue. It's not a freedom of religion issue. It's not even an issue of gay right. Of someone came on here and said the world was flat we would roll our eyes and laugh. If someone came on here and said anyone who eats pig or even touches pig is a sinner we'd snicker.
When I go to church the Pastor reads passes and then tells is what they mean to our lives now not two thousands plus years ago. The "but it's in the bible" group comes across silly when you consider what else is in the Bible. There are some wonderful things in that book but you can't leave common sense out. It was written by man.
Compare that the Justine Sacco incident (so this isn't just a gay debate). A PR exec who tweets "going to Africa. Hope I don't get aids. Just kidding. I'm white". She is immediately fired and issued an apology. There are many people with racist opinions. But we don't stand up and shout about their "right" to be racist. One major difference here is Sacco isn't hiding behind Christianity as an excuse to make stupid remarks.
And this honestly makes me think about social media. Far too many people I know post to twitter and Facebook things that blow my mind.

I'm going to choose not to comment specifically on this, because (a) my feelings are quite mixed on this and (b) threads like these change nobody's opinion, but here's the link to the article for the full context... www.gq.com/entertainment/television/201401/duck-dynasty-phil-robertsonReligious views aside, the man has some weird opinions... his reason provided for his presidential vote seems either disingenuous or just plain ignorant.

Thirty seconds into any of his rambling speaking engagements is enough to see that he should be irrelevant in this world. His right to speak his backwards ignorant opinions aren't more important than A&E's right to ditch him. That's what people miss here. Freedom of expression does not mean no consequences.

That's the problem with living in a whiney, don't offend me world. We don't really have freedom of speech and expression anymore, anyone has a different opinion on things anymore they are ridiculed and attacked over it. Hell in Toronto they want the police to stop carrying guns because some nutjobs got shot after they tried to stab someone. Whine whine whine without rational thought these days.

Well......that sure didn't last long! LOL!!! Phil Robertson Will Return To 'Duck Dynasty' Episodes In January!! www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/12/21/phil-robertson-duck-dynasty-return_n_4485646.htmlTo all those that did not realize that this was/is all a PR stunt, A&E set up the interview with GQ, there was an A&E representative present during the interview, A&E could have kiboshed the whole thing, but they went public with it, caused a media frenzy, and now a franchise program and a network that was starting to become stagnant is front and centre!! And ratings will go through the roof!!! SUCKAS!!!

If anything we have far more freedom to express our opinions regardless of how odd or anti-social they might be. I understand what you're saying but I don't agree with it as a blanket statement. This situation goes to show that many of the people supporting this guy only believe on freedom of expression for the side they agree with. He can say whatever he wants. And his boss can choose to not do business with him as a result of it. I think too many people are getting focused on the bible aspect of this and are missing the point. Preach love not hate. G-a-y is a sin is akin to the flat earthers. The ignorance towards black people is sort of being missed too. This guy is an equal opportunity hater.

That's unfortunate. I never expected A&E to cancel the show but assumed we would at least get some capitulation from these hicks. It just goes to show you that hateful, prejudiced speech is okay as long as it's wrapped up in the bible. Where are all the people supporting Sacco? That proves this isn't a freedom of expression issue.
In the history of the civil rights movement there were many dark days and backwards steps. This is anther one. Hopefully the day will come when a person isn't characterized as a "sin" or an abomination just for being born different.

"Persons" aren't characterized as sins. Acts are.
