ontario will never get another team. 100% NEver ever ever never ever. EVEr.
Ontario does not need another team. Detroit, Buffalo, Toronto, and Ottawa all play around toronto. PLenty of hockey on tv for them, plenty within a decent drive. Too many teams that have an interest in the area. Sorry its Never going to happen because the nhl doesnt want it to happen..only TSN wants it to happen.
If broawrd county decides to be a true floridian they will save the panthers...but id like to see the depths the panthers go to before tha happens.

^ Ottawa and Detroit are each 4 hours from Toronto so no the market does need another team. If someone is willing to break the bank Toronto will get another team but it will cost a hell of a lot of money.

Markham is dead. Absolutely 100% dead. I doubt Toronto area gets a 2nd team due to the leafs helping fund the sun belts. Quebec and Seattle will get teams but they will be expansion. No one is moving. The arena in Florida will be saved in the end. Vegas would be a lot worse than Florida/Phoenix. At least Florida/Phoenix have "demographic upside"/big TV markets and most importantly they have politicians who 1. Funded the arenas 2. Are dumb enough to cover the operating loses Vegas politicians won't even put a dime in the construction let alone cover loses. The team would have to make it on it's own. Yikes!!!! Markhams dead, when/ what happened there?

I wouldn't say 100% never but close to it. Toronto though certain does need another NHL team as long as it's not close to Buffalo. Toronto is the hockey capital of the world. 8.7M people(going to be over 10M by 2020) is too many people to have only 1 team but I doubt it happens. The NHL would rather "save" the arenas in Sunrise and Glendale than go to Toronto and upset the Leafs.

^ it's my understanding a second gta team is all about money. The nhl wants a lot of money for a team there because they know it'll be worth half a billion at least once it starts operation. No one has been willing to put up that much money so no one has been able to land a team. If someone comes to the nhl with 500-600 million for a team in Toronto the league will listen but not until then.

It just istn going to happen. Like Mike said for it to happen you need to go into toronto to relieve buffalo (and no you dont destroy a franchise because one place may help lift a team. teams are regional accept it. )
But to go into toronto the NHLs most wealthy team needs to submit to it happening. Nope not going to happen.

Not only would you have to come up with a large pot of money for the team, you'd have to pay for a good chunk of the arena probably, plus give MLSE an insane payout that would probably make the project not worthwhile. It's probably NOT going to happen. Maple Leafs are just like the San Francisco Giants and any other sports team. Territory hogs.

Did the Panthers end up getting the public funds? I really don't wanna read through 6 pages of this stuff.

Panthers want all the money and none of the risk. They dont want to give any profits back...and since there arent any from the team but plenty from the operation? Yea it comes down to how each entity is viewed.
The thing that drives me NUTS is the idea that the incredibly profitable busy arena couldnt draw major acts without the panthers? REALLY Not true at all. Just erroneous on all counts. The panthers couldnt draw carrot top to an arena. They arent the reason springsteen is coming...the reason springsteen comes is so they can do double shows hitting miami and ft lauderdale in one show. Its a great location for an arena....for concerts not hockey.
What a joke. The key is how the separate the two entities. IF the owner of the panthers could run the arena without having to have the team? the team would be gone.

^^^ Yes but the county wouldn't go for that because they wouldn't be "major league" anymore. The reason the county built the arena wasn't to attract concerts but to be major league.
To answer Wolfmanicks question the county will cave. The only question is how badly.

this is a big issue in florida now though. Even at the state level they are questioning this type of local spending, Towns have to watch it because you have to wonder if those state sports spending bills will go through

The county will pony up regardless. The arena will be "saved".

The county will pony up regardless. The arena will be "saved". its amazing how people can be so short cited. There is just no reason to think that the panthers are the reason that arena is successful when there are two businesses frequenting that profitable arena. Business 1- Panthers Which lose money for the arena business 2- Concerts which are making the entire operation profitable. Wouldnt removing a drain help? Not according to major league broward county. What baffles me is how the county doesnt see the panthers relocation as a blessing. Think about it. They still owe debt on the arena. Fine CUT A DAMN DEAL. We will release you from your obligation to the lease. IN EXCHANGE you continue to run the arena and book the same or more events per year. On top of that a portion of the sale of the team is paid to the County to help alleviate the remaining debt on the arena. it was built for 185m. Id like to see how much they owe.
