What message is she sending? She an athlete at the Olympics. Caught up in the moment and enjoying the experience. She not a politician. Sorry but not everyone is thinking politics all the time...especially foreign politics. You're 3000th post is like many of the 2999 before it. Headscratching. So well done, I guess. There's nothing head scratching about being disgusted by anti-gay laws and beliefs. It's not all that different then racism. Whats disgusting is your reaction, anyway your logic is flawed on this one in my opinion

Its a picture with a world leader, nothing to do with politics or statement making. lets for example say she had her pic taken with Obama, using your logic, then that means she supports the US government spying on their own citizens because she had her picture taken with him

This is a world Official, who, because of is anti-gay beliefs, has drawn protests and negative attention to these Olympics so unless you too, are anti-gay or have been hiding under a rock, you either don't mind him or aren't aware of what he's done in Russia. It's actually quite sad. Give it a rest. Are you watching the Olympics at all? If yes, do you support anti-gay beliefs because you're supporting Putin's Olympics? Sometimes a picture is just a picture, not a political statement. Too much is being made of it.

It's actually quite sad. As JHF's resident trans, I'll offer my two cents. I absolutely loathe Putin's anti-LGBT beliefs. HOWEVER, I don't see a picture with him being an endorsement of his actions. In hockey terminology, I feel like it's if a person got a picture with Nikolai Khabibulin. Would people take that as endorsing drunk driving? The answer: probably not. Now if she actually endorsed Putin or her beliefs, then we'd actually have a story, or a problem.

Oh boy. Im going to have some surprising and not surprising thoughts here.
To clarify:
"The newly-introduced Russian law bans “the propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations”, which in this case refers to any public expression of support for relationships between men and men, women and women, and involving bisexuals and transgender people; furthermore, it discourages discussion of such relationships among people younger than 18. Those who violate the law can expect fines of up to 5,000 rubles ($AUD166) for individuals, and one million rubles ($AUD33,245) for organisations. Punishments are more severe for propaganda on the web or in the media, and foreign citizens are subject to fines of up to 100,000 rubles ($AUD3,324), up to 15 days in prison, and deportation and denial of re-entry into Russia."
Now, anyone with an iota os common sense knows exactly what these laws mean and what they are designed to do. Anyone (and that includes a few posters in this thread) that look for the silver lining or the excuse in that law are promoting homophobia no matter how subtle. I dont really care if you express that you are not a homophobe but defend this law. YOU ARE A HOMOPHOBE. There is a lot of subtle anti-gay sentiment (eg. "I dont care what adults do but keep it away from my kids", "I dont want my kids exposed", "Just keep it in private, no one needs to see it" etc).
I've got a very close friend who recently came out. He's the Godfather of a young boy who's parents routinely and consistently reenfoce gender role sterotypes because they dont want him to end up gay. They themselves have no outward issue with my friend and in fact the boy's aunt also came out recently. So the parents are "sensitive" to this. But ofcourse, they would say "our dear friend and sister are both gay. We are clearly not homophobic" yet they are desperate to prevent their son from being gay. And ofcourse, as the majority of intelligent know, that kid is either gay or straight already.
Anyway...as it relates to "SelfieGate", my opinion is, people need to cut this athlete come slack. I also considered the Obama example someone mentioned earlier. A photo is not an endorsment. I would not want to shake hands with or take a picture with a person like Putin. But if I was at an event and he was there, in that environment, would I decline? Honestly, I dont know. It's history, not endorsment. If someone took a pic with Hitler (here's the Hitler mention for today) in the 40's, people would rightfully condemn that person at the time. But now? They'd show off that picture as a piece of history.
Blame deserves to be handed out though. Just not at this athlete. Aubut and the organizers who invited Putin to Canada House deserve blame. I heard Aubut practically embraced Putin. Aubut *is* a politician and honestly, I find his behaviour to be distasteful.
We as a nation sent our athletes. Im not going to blame these young men & women for not being politically active in a communist nation in the midst of their unimaginable focus and drive to represent our country athletically.
In summary: Putin is a piece of garbage. These laws ARE anti-gay. Anyone who disputes that is entitled to their opinion but they also must wear the fact that that opinion is homophobic. Brittany is an athlete at an official event, representing her country with courtesy and professionalism who took a picture with a historically significant person. Im willing to cut her some slack and believe she learned from this and probably has a far greater understanding of the connection between the man and his politics.

Are you kidding? You're either trying to pick a fight or incredibly naive. Its too easy to call you a homophobe but a serious discussion would likely lead to that. You can't, in this day and age, defend Russia's laws on homosexuality. You just can't. Any opinion in that direction IS anti-gay. And please dont pull the "whats wrong with passing a law to say you cant expose children to homosexuality?" I mean, really. Two CFL players made remarks about NFL player Michael Sam who came out a week or two ago. This topic was discussed on a Blue Bombers forum I frequent and the response was 99.9% against the anti-gay remarks (especially by Arland Bruce). One poster tried to defend Bruce using the "my beliefs are different than yours" nonsense and the response was swift and clear by every other board user, including the moderators. I immediately thought about this forum and how it wouldnt be the same. The homophobia that exists is sad. The subtle homophobia wrapped up in religion, freedom of expression etc is just disgusting.

I think the last thing the girl was think was about was his stand on G a Y laws, she got a chance to get a photo with a world leader took it and when people started pointing things out to her she pull the photo, she did nothing wrong, and she is not a supporter of the mans views. That would be like getting a photo with George Bush Jr., it doesn't make you s redneck, racist and a dumbass, just a photo opportunity.

Bush isn't a racists, redneck or dumbass but I get your point and agree with it. Its a shame that people like Deuce will use this to defend their homophobia when they clearly do not understand the laws in Russia. Sad.

Sigh.
I don't harbor homophobia. I've articulated my thoughts on the issue clearly but getting you to understand is like trying to teach a three year old poker.
The law is specific - it addresses propaganda. It is silent on anything else.
