The Miami Dolphins are reducing capacity at Sun Life Stadium from 75,540 to 65,300 as part of a $350M renovation. Capacity drops from 8th in the NFL to 27th. 14,000 VERY crappy upper deck seats(the worst seats in pro sports just about) will be removed in the far corners and will be replace by scoreboards. Expensive seats will be added along the sidelines. There is plenty of room because the Marlins uses to play here so they needed the space for a baseball field. Sun Life Stadium had by far the most upper deck seats in the NFL. Sun Life Stadium(built in 1987) is one of the few pre-90's facilities in sports that was saveable. The Dolphins agree to stay 30 years. A canopy will be built over the seating bowl. Here is what it will look like. www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/miami-dolphins/sfl-bphotosb-renderings-of-sun-life-stadium-renovations-20130114,0,5523309.photogallery?index=sfl-sun-life-stadium-renderinga-20130114 Here is what the stadium currently looks like www.cbssports.com/nfl/eye-on-football/24591013/miami-dade-co-approves-renovations-deal-for-dolphins-stadiumConstruction starts in July. The owner is footing the cost BUT the county is paying him for hosting major events if he is able to attract them. For example he gets 4M for each super bowl. According to field of schemes the max he probably could get over the life of the deal is 123M. Cleveland did something similar to this during this offseason. They removed 2,000 upper deck seats and added about 500 in the lower bowl. A few years ago the Washington Redskins removed 6,000 seats in the upper deck and built 2 party decks. I like the idea of removing crappy seats that may not be used. The home experience is getting better and better with technology. No purpose to having exceptionally bad cheap nosebleed seats. Miami area is now allowed to host super bowls again.

^^^ 100-123M is not a bad price as far as NFL stadium deals go. The city keeps the Dolphins 30 more years plus gets super bowls. A lot of cities would cut their arms off for this deal. A new stadium these days costs at least 1B.
Here is more on the flaws that the current stadium had from Wikipedia. It's really great the team was able to renovate and solve these flaws.
Robbie believed it was only a matter of time before a Major League Baseball team came to South Florida. At his request, the stadium was built so only minimal renovations would be necessary to ready it for a baseball team.[citation needed] Most notably, the field was made somewhat wider than is normally the case for an NFL stadium. The wide field also makes it fairly easy to convert the stadium for soccer.
Because of this design decision, the first row of seats is 90 feet (27 m) from the sideline in a football configuration, considerably more distant than the first row of seats in most football stadiums (the closest seats at the new Soldier Field, for instance, are 55 feet (17 m) from the sideline at the 50-yard line). This resulted in a less intimate venue for football compared to other football facilities built around this time
Since the field runs east-west (rather than north-south as is the case in most other stadiums), the north stands are exposed to the full force of South Florida's oppressive heat early in the season. The issue has become so problematic that Stephen Ross, who owns the Dolphins and Sun Life Stadium, successfully petitioned the NFL to have all September home games start at 4 pm. Although the heat gave the Dolphins a substantial home-field advantage against opponents unaccustomed to the sweltering heat, Ross was willing to give that up in order to ensure a more comfortable environment for fans.
there are 27,397 seats in the lower deck and 34,736 seats in upper deck

The renovation will shift the ratio to upper to lower deck seats to around 31,397 lower deck, 20,736 upper deck. We always pick on Miami because of how bad the Panthers SUCK but you have to give fans credit for coming out to games as long as they did. Other than the last few years the Dolphins have had great attendance since 89 on.

Its a great travel destination for in division teams too, thats why they dont play in the AFC south. Too many bostonions, and new yorkers (city and upstate) to take that gate away from miami. ITs a great vacation + catch a game team for any team traveling to miami.
and the dolphins have been laughable. look at the head coach starting qb turnover ( a recipe for disaster).
phx had the same problem and wasnt allowed to host day game home games at the old open air stadium.

I thought they were supposed to be building a new stadium in Miami? No but a pretty solid renovation. David Beckham is trying to get a soccer stadium built though

I was in the stadium a few years back and they were showing a new stadium on the jumbotron. Talked about it being built. My dad said to me why do they need a new stadium. I said I didn't know. Maybe the deal fell through or something? Or maybe it was the reno they were talking about. But that was years ago. At least 5 years.
