It's happened before. IN the 70s when Pele came, soccer thrived for a few years before receding into relative obscurity. In the 90s, soccer was thriving in the early 90s until World Cup 94, then went back into relative obscurity. Experts have expected Soccer to overtake Hockey for over 40 years, and compete with the NFL, NBA, and MLB. I doubt it will ever happen. It will be tough for soccer to come close to the big 3 since you do have to compete with Europe but you can't possible compare current MLS to the past. We have a lot more immigrants(both Canada and the US) and many more coming from soccer loving countries. By the way I hate soccer and hope it fails but I just don't see it. Immigration trends are favoring soccer. Only hope is it gets rejected because we can't hold a candle to Europe and is seen as minor league. Or Gary Bettman takes it over That's not exactly true. The US and Canada have always had steady immigation patterns. It's more noticable now, due to the immigrants being from non-European countries today. Decades ago, most immigrants still came from European countries. However, the number of immigrants, compared to the North American popualtion has always remained stable. It actually peaked in the immediate aftermath of World War II.

Look at MLS attendance. Look at National Team performance, Look at Professional Americans abroad. Sorry Soccer is here. You dont want to accept it. It is still in very early stages only a 20 year old league but that league s not going to fold...not for a long time. This isnt Pele and the NASL. Even comparing this to that makes you seem ignorant. Soccer has always been here. It's been here for over a century. It's always been more popular in Canada than the US. As far as national team performance goes, they have yet to do anything significant Internationally. The Americans actually fared better in soccer in the 1930s than today. I'm not going to debate with you if you are going to hurl childish insults at me, like being "ignorant" for disagreeing with you. Grow up, dude. Lets see you have hit the Soccer isnt popular Bingo game Pele (B) NASL (I) 30s US soccer? (N) btw that team was made up almost entirely of immigrants at the beginning when fifa didnt have clear rules on nationality. TV ratings (G) idioted comment like its more popular in Canada than the US? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA BINGO WE HAVE BINGOOOOO HAHAHAHA Soccer is WAYyYYYYYYYYYY more popular in the United States than Canada. Oh and btw the top professional league in canada? is Major league soccer. You guys are the Soccer equivalent to fn Wales having to play within another countries professional league system. Canada cant even qualify for the World Cup. The US now is a regular to make it to the knockout round. winning the world cup is a feat only 4-5 counties in soccer have a chance of doing. Dear fn lord.

Oh they are expanding to Vegas for sure. That's a given. Bettman will wait for Seattle. Or maybe he won't. He'll probably do something wackey like push for a suburban arena in Belleview so instead of hockey working in Seattle he can create Glendale 2.0 without a Sammy Chivara to save the team.

I do hope you are right.

Keep bringing the false equivalents like NASL played in Shea Stadium with goofy offsides rules and a dead american soccer program.
There is no debating.
And no Soccer is not bigger in Canada than the US
The funny thing is Candians seem to be very angry to mention the second most popular sport in the country.
BTW Canadas second best sport right now is basketball and then probably baseball as far as professional quality.

Soccer is more popular in canada than america....thats a good one. Soccer has always been more popular in Canada than the US, per capita. If you're referring to numbers, you have to keep in mind that the USA has ten times the population of Canada. Pound for pound, we are superior to the Americans at soccer. The US just has a much larger population base to draw players, and you have to consider Canada loses it's best players to Europe (Hargreaves, etc). World Cup and UEFA have always pulled in better ratings in Canada than the USA.

Just accept the truth Canada is a hockey basketball country now.

Just to back up my claim, in regards to soccer popularity in Canada: CBC's FIFA World Cup coverage from Brazil set new records for television and online viewing.
Approximately 30.7 million Canadians tuned in at some point during the month-long tournament from Brazil, which represents 89 per cent of the country's population. Of that total, 6.6 million watched at least part of a game online.
An average of 4.93 million watched on television to see Germany's dramatic 1-0 victory over Argentina in the final Sunday, making it the most watched match of the tournament and the most watched Word Cup final ever, edging the 2010 mark.
Viewership for the final peaked at 7.4 million in the game's final stages, with 11.3 million tuning in at some point during the English-language broadcast.
"Canadians continue to turn to CBC for the best in sports coverage and the audience turnout we’ve experienced with this World Cup is a great sign heading into our upcoming slate of major international amateur athletic competitions," Jeffrey Orridge, executive director, sports properties and general manager, Olympics, CBC, said in a statement. "We could not bring an event of this magnitude to Canadians across multiple platforms without the continued hard work and dedication of the men and women behind the scenes and in front of the cameras who make CBC Canada’s best venue for watching world class sporting events."www.cbc.ca/sports/soccer/brazil2014/cbc-fifa-world-cup-watched-by-canadians-in-record-numbers-1.2706905It should be noted that Canadians participate in Soccer, far more than any other organized sport.

It should be noted that Canadians participate in Soccer, far more than any other organized sport. yet suck. 13 million americans play soccer. Im not doubting that canadians tend to watch important international sports. Im telling you that Soccer Culture and following is Much larger in the US. Its a better soccer nation. Sorry. We have better performance, People participating, and continued growth among the populace thebiglead.com/2014/12/19/epl-games-garnering-more-viewers-than-nhl-games-on-nbcsn-rights-fees-for-next-tv-deal-should-only-increase/Soccer is IMO already on its way of overtaking the NHL Fact is you started your argument with the Soccer isnt popular in the US with the 70s NASL Pele ignorant argument. Then Tried to pull the "canadians are more worldly" argument. Let me know when canada manages to qualify over panama and costa rica

Add one more ratings record to the World Cup before we close the book on Brazil: The World Cup Final between Germany and Argentina was the most-watched soccer match in American history, drawing more than 26 million viewers.
Chief among everything the 2014 World Cup in Brazil will be remembered for is the staggering growth of the game in the United States. More than ever before fans flocked to the television to watch the beautiful game.
It wasn't just for the American games, either. Going back the last few World Cups, the US had been tuning in to watch the Red, White and Blue but this World Cup fans started watching other matches en masse, too. It's incredibly impressive that the final between Germany and Argentina drew more eyeballs (at least that the ratings system could measure) than USA games.www.cbssports.com/world-cup/eye-on-world-cup/24622027/world-cup-final-sets-usa-television-record-with-265-million-viewers----- The 2014 World Cup did very well in the US, but not quite as well as Canada: Percentage of Canadians who watched the World Cup Final: 35 million Canadians/4.93 million viewers = 14.1%
Percentage of Americans who watched the World Cup Final: 320 million/26 million viewers = 8.1%

After hockey season an entire country essentially jsut has the blue jays. in the US, NASCAR and 29 MLB teams playing. A single viewership doesnt prove your point. Soccer is bigger in the US than canada in participation, and uite frankly in money, dedication and performance.

If the Canadian Soccer Association was given a complete overhaul, I have no doubt that we would once again be competitive, for the first time in over 20 years.

"Canada ranks ninth in the world when it comes to registered athletes in soccer. According to a 2006 FIFA census, one in 39 Canadians is enrolled in the sport at some level. By comparison, one in 40 Italians plays. In the United States, it’s one in 72. Germany ranked the highest with one soccer athlete for every 14 people."source: www.macleans.ca/society/the-good-ol-soccer-game/------ The fact is 1 in 39 Canadians participate in organized soccer. Only 1 in 72 do so in the USA.
