I don't understand it either. I could see taking this approach if there were no other arena plans in the area. Taking NHL 1st without NBA is a big risk but if you want to be the Sonics owner and there is another arena plan you have to go for the NHL. The only way this makes sense is if the Seattle city council 100% promised him they'd approve his arena even with another arena in the area. Maybe he never wanted the NHL to compete with and if he did get his arena maybe he figures in a couple years the suburban NHL team will go under in a handful of years and he will have the market all to himself for winter sports.

I think the NBA is going to ned more pressure to expand..BECAUSE they dont need to because they have the TV deal....the NHL needs this money to supplement Gary's colossal error.

True but Hansen doesn't like hockey and maybe he figures that it's not a great investment considering Seattle would be one of the smallest 4 team markets.
The only pressure to expand for nba is as a chip in CBA talks(take less % of revenue, we give you more jobs)

Ken Campbell @thnkencampbell I've confirmed the NHL will not be extending today's deadline to apply for an expansion franchise. I honestly would have thought that Toronto would put in a bid for a second team. There has to be enough rich dudes out here willing to pay for a team here knowing it will be a license to print money.

If you are rejected the NHL keeps 2M dollars of the 10M you have to give them to apply. There was no arena plan in Toronto and no guarantee that you can get past MLSE. No one was going to risk giving the NHL 2M dollars on a long shot. You don't get to be a millionaire/billionaire doing stuff like that.

^^ Oh cool thanks mike I did not know that. ^ Unfortunately this means nothing. If the NHL believes that this group is close to having their sandwiches in the basket for a team in the Seattle area they will bump them ahead of Quebec in a heart beat. The NHL said right off the bat there is no guarantee that this process will lead to an actual expansion, they will say that the cities that applied now will not have to apply again in the future and when Seattle is ready, they and Vegas will get franchises and Quebec will be kept int he dark as the city the League uses as the threat of relocation just like they did with Winnipeg right up until they got the Thrashers.

I guess this means that Las Vegas and Quebec are going to be in the NHL, by default? I always thought the $500 million entry fee was ridiculous. If it were $250 million, there would have been applications from 10 markets at the least.
