Hull is what? 77 years old. I'm not condoning what Hull did in his private life. It's a little strange that these incidents occurred over 30 years ago, and were public knowledge in Winnipeg since the 80s, and are just causing controversy this year. The domestic issues were known even before we retired Hull's #9 at the end of the 80s. I recall there was even talk of naming the Winnipeg Arena after him at one point. How times have changed.
Then again, the 80s Oilers were no saints:
MacTavish: killed someone will drunk driving Anderson: owed hundreds of thousands in child support Messier: supposed incidents with "ladies of the night" while an Oiler. Gretzky: smeared Crap on Hotel walls, outspoken supporter of Iraq invasion of 2003. Coffey: suspended for uttering racial slurs as a coach. Fuhr: cocaine use for much of 80s.

I don't recall any backlash when we retired his number back in 1989.
Now granted his comments about Hitler were made much later - but his domestic abuse issues were all there.
That's just the drawback of the social media era we are in. Anyone can exploit anything about someone - rightfully or wrongly - and then everyone gets their voice out.
