Let me start by saying that this has been a refreshing off-season compared to the others. I don't recall one where the organization admitted to needs that we could all plainly see and then went out and addressed them. This is not about signing Mason and Kulikov, it is about what to me seemed completely out of character for management. They made a deal with Vegas that nobody saw coming, we were all convinced Dano was gone and hoping he could make a deal to lose Matthias, instead Vegas picked a player from our roster that we had absolutely zero interest in signing moving forward. Then word got out he was looking to make a deal (turned out Emelin turned us down) around the draft. Then he went and spent money on UFA players that address our glaring needs and picked up some depth. The biggest sign that management is serious is the buyout of Mark Stuart, TNSE is known for/accused of extreme loyalty. Moving on from Peluso, Thorburn, Pavelec and Stuart is so refreshing. These moves are a good start, now the rest of the off-season should bring us some more AHL depth, some contract extensions and hopefully some coaching evaluation.
Still work to do but the change in direction earns Chevy a B+ mid-term

I don't think this is a change in direction at all.Chevy has said from the start,draft and develope and when we reach a point they would bring in needed talent by FA or trade.We are just at a different point than we have been before.

Chevy has finally fixed some holes that the Jets have had for years. I know he is Conservative, and has to deal with many players who have Winnipeg on their "no trade' list. Ultimately, Mason was a good acquisition. Not sold on Kulikov, especially with the contract, but time will tell.

Despite The Score's Dave Sanford declaring the Jets a loser in this years Free Agency Chevy did well. There was a need and he met it. Agree with Muddy on a B+.

I go B minus. I agree that Chevy fixed two holes that we all see as being critical to address but I think there may have been opportunities for Chevy to do something a bit more impactful like bringing in Travis Hamonic versus Kulikov. I know the price was more but when you get a guy on July 1st he is there for a reason. Calgary stole a Manitoba guy from us that would have gladly played in Winnipeg and has unbelievable character. Some of you may whine about the price on Hamonic but with Kulikov you will get what you payed for. I also would have been a little more aggressive with Alzner as his contract doesnt look that much bigger than Kulikov less term.
Would rather have had Pickard than Mason but I can live with him.

Hamonic is a right handed dman so not really the best fit for this team without having to move someone else. |

Absolutely not. You would be willing to give the jets 1st round pick next year plus 2 seconds for a very similar quality d-man??!! If the Jets made this sort of trade right after they broke through into the playoffs and the future was shade-wearing bright they would not have Laine. NEVER NEVER trade next years first round pick. Kulikov was a better d-man than either Hamonic or Alzner in 2015-16. Playing with Ekblad. He was Florida's best d-man in their playoff series. He was brought into Buffalo to play 22-25 minutes a game on their top pairing with Ristolainen The Jets said they looked at his recovery and say he is ready to go. The Jets have done the impossible, they signed a for sure top-4 d-man who may be a top 2 as a UFA at a reasonable contract. Had Kulikov not been hurt all of last season he would have been getting 5.5-6 M rather than the 4.3 The Jets are getting ready to deal with Trouba and are in a much better position if they have to trade him. Myers/Kulikov/Morrissey/Byfuglien is a playoff level top 4. Right now they are at least an A and looking at an A+ (or a B) in how they handle Trouba's contract. |

Upon seeing the contracts dished out in that day or so, I'd put Chevy at an A. The Radulov, Marleau, and Thornton contracts are ridiculous IMO.

I expect to over pay here and there because we aren't THAT team yet, but half a mill a yr over 3? Big deal. Those types of over pays will only cripple a team if they run rampant, which is not the case with the Jets. A-. |

The Jets addressed their main areas of weakness ( needing a top 4 LHD better than Toby and 6 seasons of when are we getting a goalie). I like the Kulikov move because he has played top pairing minutes on some very mediocre clubs, if he is able to stay healthy I feel he will make an immediate impact on our top 4. Being able to play Enstrom on the third pairing will not only help the team but help a guy who's glory days are gone but can still help the team (for next season at least). I think Enstrom will have a really good year, and be used as a good puck mover on PP when needed. We do need to shed him from this organization after next year and that awful 5.75m cap hit. Extending Chariot maybe for a livable 2 year contract just means the jets see him as the number 6-7 guy for the next two seasons and I am alright with that.
As to Mason I believe he will be a great tandem with Hellebuyck for next season and wouldn't be surprised to see him play 40-50 games. Hellebuyck isn't ready to be the starter next season as last season showed so to have a Decent Veteran presence will only make him improve if he wants to play. This also give Comrie more time until hopefully him and Hellebuyck will hold down the fort in years to come.
These and all the moves that Chevy wasn't able to get done I'll give him a B for thus far in the off season. Can't see a lot more moves happening and I think the roster we have now will remain mostly the same for the next
Couple years besides Enstrom when his contract is up and guys like Connor and Roslovic making the roster when their time comes. The moves he made is gunna give way to a interesting next couple years for the Jets hopefully enough to have us on the in instead of the outside looking in.
