Enough with the ad hominem arguments and saying his opinions are invalid cause he wrote "one great city" which i personally love.
He's welcome to think the logo is bland or uninspired but I think his argument fails with "To me, at a glance, the new logo will imply that whoever wears it supports both the actions of the Canadian military and the politicians who deploy them. Where does that leave those hockey fans that feel varying degrees of otherwise?"
To imply that people will think someone wearing a jets logo supports the actions of the Canadian military and the politicians who implore them is ridiculous. The vast majority of people are intelligent enough to make the distinction between supporting a hockey team with a military inspired logo and supporting the military or military endeavors. And The politicians who implore them is a stretch beyond belief. Oh that guys wearing a jets jersey, he must be a harper backer! Ludicrous

Thats just it Cheswick, you can dislike the colors, you can dislike the design, but dislike it because it implies support for deploying Canadian troops around the world to fight war is stupid. Whatever songs this guy wrote doesn't matter, his stupidity over the logo does.

Just to add, The Toronto Maple Leafs are named after a World War I regiment and no one seems to have a problem with that. What about the Calgary Flames? While their name has NO CONNECTION whatsover to either Calgary or Alberta, it still has a lot to do with Atlanta where the franchise was named after a disaster caused by war: The name 'Flames' originated from the burning of Atlanta led by U.S. Army general William Sherman during the American Civil War. They kept the name flames because of the oil industry, the flame atop the rig.

Good discussion...
My problem with weakerthan's stance is that he talks about "military" and "militarization" in such a generic sense. There's a big difference between Hitler's military (offenders of the peace) and the Canadian military (defenders of the peace).
He doesn't specify what his problem is with the Canadian military and when you put his comments together he makes it clear that he doesn't support the Canadian Military OR any political party that has ever formed government in Canada, since the 2 major parties have deployed the military from time to time. Even our provincial NDP has called in the military for assistance from time to time (shame?).
So he puts himself in such a small minority that his view seems to be fringe at best. I can respect his view but it's hard to take him seriously from a "branding" point of view.
Also, exactly how is the name Bombers only "vaguely militaristic"?

I would also like to comment that I do not know any of this dude's music nor have I heard or have any interest hearing the song in question.

I just can't believe how much play this gets. 5 pages? C'mon, the guy's a contributor to a local magazine that most of us haven't heard of and this is an easy column. And like I said before in this thread, the Air Force doesn't use the old roundel anymore. As long as the team sticks with the logo for a decade or so, that military connection becomes a trivia question anyway.
Chevy needs to sign a guy or something so we can move on.

Meh, z it's the middle of summer, not much news...can't help what posters gravitate to. I completely agree with you, but we need to have some patience. I think many of us are still in the old jetsowner "defend against the naysayer mode" (although he's clearly not naysaying the team, just the logo). The reality of our team has maybe not totally sunken in yet for some of us, and it's not possible for many of us to even talk about the Jets as an on-ice product yet. I honestly don't know what to say about any of our players aside from the ones I know from watching the Blackhawks (Buf and Kane). Right now I could talk much more intelligently (although not more passionately) about the Pens than the Jets. It will help everyone to move into the next phase (actual Jets hockey talk) when we get to see our team in action in a few short weeks... BTW, would love to see more new Jets player threads so I can keep learning about what I can expect to see this year!

I still own Propagandhi's first album "how to clean everything", so this opinion doesn't surprise me. I'm actually proud that tnse tied the military to the logo.
Check out the lyrics to understand his political and social views:

How to Clean Everything was a great album. I haven't really listened to Propagandhi in years though. Never got into the Weakerthans.

To be honest, I'm betting that it could have ONLY been a Right-leaning, Conservative-type that could have ever hoped to bring the NHL back to Winnipeg, but this is ALL just my opinion. I have a hunch that this debate was probably already in that territory before I came along...but thanks ( I guess?)
