If Mason is willing to take a pay cut then he will be back!

Take a good look at those pics. Gustavssons crazy eyes show he is looking spooked and he is saying "WTF is happening" in his mind while take a look at Mason and he is saying "bring it on MF" all calm and good to go If you look at how they are standing, it looks like JG is down to face a shot, whereas CM doesn't have the puck anywhere near him. That could explain the expressions... I voted Mason though, simply because of his passion for the city and commitment to the team.

I am very surprised at the number of Mason responses. We sure love our "nice guys". I love Chris Mason too and how he bought into the team. I'd hate to see him go but bottom line is: a) He's 36 while Gustavsson is 28. b) Mason played 20 games last year while Gustavsson played 42 c) Mason's save % has been below .900 for past 2 seasons, and had a 3.39 GAA 2 years ago, while Gustavsson's numbers were pretty much a copy of Pavelec's last season. d) Mason's "great" stats last year were helped by the fact of his 15 starts, 8 were against non-playoff teams with 4 against Carolina.
IMO other than the "nice guy" factor Gustavsson is the answer to this question. If Pavelec gets hurt or struggles, Gustavsson has the ability to carry the work load like he did when Reimer went down for the Leafs.

I have not been following the leafs much; however, if Gustavsson is so good, why did the leafs trade the negotiation rights to the jets for a seventh round pick?

He put up similar numbers to Pavelec, and most are happy with his numbers.
So Mason is a no brained, if things work out.

Okay, lets put one thing to rest, MONSTER is a stupid nickname.......
Lets go with Mags or something, but Monster sounds silly.
For the sake of this arguement though

In my heart I'm rooting for Mason, but in my head I have to agree that Gustavsson is probably the better goalie, in particular in case of an injury to Pavelec where we may need someone to step in as the top guy. Having said that, I think Mason probably brings better leadership / locker room dynamics. I think he is better suited to accepting his role as a backup, yet pushing Pavelec and providing mentorship/leadership in the locker room. Bottom line is if Pavelec remains healthy, I think Mason is perhaps the better backup. But Gustavsson is likely the better safety net in case of a long term injury. (Sort of a seperate topic, but I would also say 8 of 15 games against non playoff teams isn't really much of a help. That's 53% of his starts, and 47% of teams make the playoffs.)

To be practical I would sign both. Have "The Monster" as the back up. Then have Mason play in St. Johns with Eddie Pasquale. Pasquale is a big time up and commer, similar to what happend with Cory Schneider of the Moose now with the Canucks. I'm Not sure if A. Mason would be willing to play in the AHL. And B Would be willing to be a back up player in the AHL. However due to his Veteran skills he would be a perfect mentor to Pasquale.

I like Mason but feel the Monster is a better goalie.

I agree with this, unfortunately I agree that I doubt Mason would play as a backup in the AHL though. But Pasquale does look to be coming in to his own, hopefully he will turn into the next Schneider. Too many good young goalies would be a good problem for the Jets to have!

I have not been following the leafs much; however, if Gustavsson is so good, why did the leafs trade the negotiation rights to the jets for a seventh round pick? First of all nobody said he was "so good". I'm saying at this point in their careers, Gustavsson, to me, would be a better option at #2. Secondly, the reason his rights were traded for a 7th rounder is because the Leafs weren't going to get anything for him anyways. Neither side was looking to re-sign. I can't argue with the leadership or mentor-like role Mason brings. He is definitely a great player to have in an organization for that sake. I just like the idea of having another younger goalie who can take on a higher workload if need be. To be honest though, with Pavelec signing, I can't see Gustavsson signing now. Gustavsson will want to play at least 30 games and I don't know if that will happen with Pavy at #1.

I would go with Gustavsson. Mostly do to age and potential.
The battle it out in training camp makes no sense as they won't sign both of them.
