The real question is; who's better for Pavs? We've locked Pavs down for a while. He's clearly our #1, and if he progresses properly, hopefully he will be for the remainder of his career. So, which back-up would be lend themselves to pushing Pavs further? Mason- experience, leadership and a great mentor. They seem to work well together already, and Pavs still has much to learn. Gus- Nothing gets you playing harder than the risk of losing your #1 status. If Pasquale is really as good as everyone expects him to become, then my vote is to keep Mason pushing Pavs. In 2 years, Pavs will (hopefully) become the elite goalie that we all dream of, Mason will retire, and Pasquale can step in as an up-and-coming #2 just in time for our playoff push. Kane and Burmi will be at the top of their games, Ladd, Little and Wheeler will be skilled veterans and Schelfs, Telegin and Trouba will be breaking out. Jets in '14!

They say Mason's work ethic is second to none, and setting an example like that is great in a young dressing room.

I think Pavs will be playing 65 to70 games again and I don't think Gustavsson will be happy with that.
Mason provides leadership in the dressing room as well as continuity.
I'll go with Mason.

See, I don't think Chevy and Noel want Pav playing 65+ games.
That is why Gus is an intriguing option, because he could probably play more reliable games than Mason.

5 Year Plan: No way Mason is playing for the Jets or the NHL or the ECHL for that matter in 5 Years. There is something to be said for Loyalty but there is even more to be said for practicality. I realy do think Pasquale has a lot of potential. You have your #1 goaltender with Pavs. A young goalie that had a lot of poetential and may still live up to some of it with "The Monster", Have Pasquale come up and play a handful of games, is the bonafide #1 in St.Johns getting lots of pucks thrown at him and gaining confidence. Mason..I do like the guy, but he just doest fit into the 5 year plan.

This is actually one of the better discussions on this board. Votes for both and good arguements on both sides. Nice to see. Thumbs up!

I think if all things are equal, Monster is the guy you take. He's younger, arguably better with more upside. If he ends up being a quality backup for 5 years, great. If he regains his form and is deserving of starter minutes, he becomes an asset we can trade.
But I have no issue with Mason returning as the back up. Company guy, hard worker, good back up.
I suspect the Jets were looking at upgrading the backup spot though, so they may not want Mason back.

I wanna be backup!
It's the perfect gig! You get centre ice front row for all the games, travel with the team, a per diem, free equipment, and a six figure salary minimum.
All you have to is open and close the door and if you have to play there's no pressure because your: "just the backup" .
The best job on the planet! Why anyone wants to be the number one guy is beyond me...

I do admire Mason but it is a business and the Franchise is being built with the long term in mind. Gus is the way to go. I can see him realizing he's not going to be a number one anywhere else but Europe. So maybe with a 30 game season he'd relax and accept his fate and be happy with this organization and living in our great city. Calling him the Monster makes us all Leaf Fans, UGH! Let's call him Gus or the Swede, or ... anything but Monster...

If its Mason, that doesnt have to hurt us long term. if he can play another couple seasons while Eddie Pasquale develops, so be it.
