Loria gutting the Marlins is getting a lot of bad press and Loria is taking a beating for it from everyone around baseball including the other owners. Props his team up, gets his new stadium with the help of $409 million in public bonds, then guts his team, saves himself a crap load of money while sitting comfortably in his nice new state of the art facility. This is why there is fear the trade may not be approved by the league.

"the Blue Jays are... THIS close to being a contender! I'm excited for the future!!!!" - every Blue Jay fan since the winter 1998 "Winnipeg is.... THIS close to getting an NHL team back! I'm excited for the future!"- every Winnipeg Jets fan from 1997 - May 31/11.

Looks like another cellar-dwelling year for my Sox...sigh....at least it'll kick off bandwagoners and keep the true fans around.

This is why there is fear the trade may not be approved by the league. The trade is going to be approved and should be approved. Loria is taking an unfair beating for this trade. Look at this trade from the Marlins prospective. Josh Johnson while very talent does have an awful injury history(He still wasn't fully recovered last year). He has only 1 year left on his contract and some team is going to badly overpay for him when he reaches free agency and will probably get burnt. Jose Reyes while a very good player also has an injury history with his hamstrings. Lot of people last year were worried the Marlins overpaid for him. Last year he stayed perfectly healty and played in 160 games but the 3 years before that he played in 36, 133 and 126 games. Playing on field turf next year may not be good for him. Mark Buehrle has a rubber arm and will probably pitch until 40 but he is 34 year old. All in all I like this trade for both teams. The Jays need to go for it while Boston is way down and New York is old and shakey. The Marlins need to rebuild. They were not the 27 Yankees. The team went 69-93. I still worry about what this will do to the Miami fan base. This isn't going to go over well but from a pure baseball prospective I don't blame them for this as long as they REINVEST the money saved in the farm system, resigning young players like Giandardo Stanton to a long term deal and signing other free agents available.

The trade is under review by the MLB. This trade is what baseball needs in Toronto, a reason to start going back to games and rebuild interest in the sport. This trade should be approved and made official so fans can start really looking forward to next season for the first time since the early 90s.

As good as this trade is, I personally don't feel that it is going to significantly change the Blue Jays. They will do better, but they won't win their division. I am just glad to see that Alex Anthopolous is trying hard to improve the team.

Oh, yeah - and good riddance to Yunel Escobar.

^^^ If everyone stays healthy they should have a good shot at one of the wild cards at worst.

^ It dosen't make them a lock for the AL East by any means let a lone start preparing for the World Series Championship party. What this trade has done is made the Blue Jays legitimate contenders for a pennant. The team has a realistic chance of it this season that is all that has been said about this team. If this team performs up to its hype I'm sure we can all agree the Jays will be a team to watch for a championship this year, but like every other team it can't be expected. This trade puts Toronto back on the baseball map, and that is an important thing for the sport in this country.

This trade also illustrates what is wrong with MLB's CBA. The Marlin's owner got a new stadium built with a lot of taxpayer money. He also gets money through revenue sharing. Now he guts his team and saves even more money. The Marlins fans get a mediocre team for the forseeable future. The Marlins have won 2 World Series Titles within 8 years of each other, and that was if I recall after doing a similar thing like having a fire sale.....

^^^ Exactly. What happened was the Marlins went out and bought a bunch of big name older free agents before the 1997 season because they were trying to get a new baseball only stadium(they played in the Miami Dolphins suburban football stadium, MLB thought the Miami Market was so great they very stupidly went into the market WITHOUT the guarantee of a new stadium). The Marlins won the 1997 World Series in 7 games over Cleveland but a new stadium was turned down so the owner at the time Wayne Huzinga couldn't afford the players anymore so he broke up the team. It turned out to be a blessing because by trading the older team off they got young stud minor leaguers (like Derek Lee etc..) who became key components of the 2003 World Series Champion Marlins team.

They were fortunate to have drafted well and have their picks all reach their peak and win a title twice. But, they could not keep those teams together.
