^^^ Not sure the point you are trying to make. The 1st Marlins title teams was NOT a bunch of young kids that were drafted and developed by the farm system. That team was almost entire made up big dollar free agents from other teams. Look up that roster on baseball reference. If i'm not mistaken the only home grown starters were the catcher Charles Johnson, the shortstop Edgar Renteria and 2nd baseman Luis Castillo. 3rd base, the entire outfield and the starting rotation was BOUGHT.
The 2nd title team in 03 was from draft picks and young players they got back in trades from the 97 title team. If the 97 title team was kept in tact they were probably too old to win again and the marlins wouldn't have had all the young guys so they wouldn't have won in 03 so they would have only 1 championship.
As far as the 03 team being broken up and this fire sale there is are a couple huge differences. In 03 the Marlins were still playing in a suburban football stadium. Not only was the stadium horrible for baseball(bad site lines, poor location baseball has to be downtown since it's 81 home games) but all the money from parking, concessions etc. went to the Miami Dolphins. Think of how the Winnipeg Jets lease was at old Winnipeg Arena. This was similar. If the Marlins had the new park they have now the team would have been kept in tact.
This firesale is different from 03 too because this Marlins team overall sucked. They finished 69-93. When you go 69-93 with big money players huge chances will be made regardless of what market you are playing in. For example The HUGE market Chicago Cubs in the past few years did a similar thing to this. After 2008 when they last make the playoffs after signing a bunch of big name free agents the team got old and stoped winning. Big money guys like Carlos Zambrano, Aramis Ramirez, Derek Lee, Geovanny Soto, Ted Lilly, and Ryan Dempster were all traded away so the team could rebuild through the farm system.
The almost huge market Houston Astros have done also undergone a similar process to this. The core of the 2005 NL championship team got too old so they traded everyone off to start over.
This last season the mighty Boston Red Sox stunk horribly so they traded away big money guys Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford and Josh Beckett to the LA Dodgers mostly for salary relief and the chance to start over. In total the Red Sox saved about 1/4 of a billion dollars in long term salary on the trade!!
