Union to eyeball cost-cutting MarlinsThe players' association will monitor the Miami Marlins following their payroll purge, saying it is too early to determine whether the salary cuts will cause any issues under baseball's labor contract. After complaints by the union that the Marlins weren't using revenue-sharing money to improve, the players' association, Major League Baseball and the Marlins reached a three-year agreement in January 2010 that the team would increase payroll annually as it prepared to move into its new ballpark in 2012. After opening last season with a $112 million payroll, the Marlins cut it to $90 million by the end of the season. With the trade of All-Star shortstop Jose Reyes and four others to Toronto on Tuesday, Miami's payroll next season projects to be around $36 million. Commissioner Bud Selig approved the deal Monday. "We understand and we're not surprised at the commissioner's decision to approve the trade," union head Michael Weiner said Tuesday. "We'll be monitoring the Marlins for compliance with the Basic Agreement throughout the 2013 season." Baseball's labor contract requires that revenue-sharing money be used by a team "in an effort to improve its performance on the field." If a team's payroll in a year is less than 125 percent of its revenue- sharing receipts, the burden to show compliance would shift to the team in a grievance. "Clearly there is no compliance issue," Weiner said. "They were compliant in 2012 based on their payroll and what their revenue-sharing status was." espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/8656784/union-monitor-miami-marlins-payroll-purge

I'm so sick of this lockout I've shifted my focus to my other teams/sports... in particular the Blue Jays. Man am I pumped about the upcoming baseball season. With the R.A. Dickey trade accepted, Vegas moved the Jays up to 8-1 favorites to win the World Series. That's tops in the entire MLB. Sucks we gave away a couple stud prospects but the Jays talented core are in their prime and you gotta put your chips all in for the next couple of years. Love the aggressiveness of Anthopolous. If the Jays crash and burn, can't blame him.

And I can't wait for World Juniors (as I'm sure do 99% of people on this forum)

Jays are all in now. Who cares about the prospects if the Jays win this year?

I'm excited for this season, but this was an iffy trade. Still, the Jays are looking closer and closer to a complete team. I'm keeping my expectations grounded for next year, the Orioles and Rays will still be good, and the Red Sox are making some good moves, they might surprise next year.

Since AA has gone all in, if the Jays are contending come trade deadline, he will do what needs to be done to make the playoffs. He won't stop unitl he has exhausted all options.

Wolfmannick - agree 100%. When you haven't won in a long time and you're ready to win now, the steep price is worth the chance.
Dcmac - Dickey definitely a wild card. Could be a 1-hit wonder for sure. But... he's had a sub 3.30 ERA last 3 seasons, logged over 170 innings in each of the last 3 seasons and walked only 2.3 batters or less per 9 innings the last 3 seasons. Yeah he's old but he's a knuckleballer which doesn't strain the arm as much. Last upside is he's been pitching in the NL for the past 3 years. AL hitters haven't see him very much so IMO Dickey has the advantage this season.

I don't blame the Jays for making this trade. Got to go for it while the Yankees and Red Sox are somewhat down. Long term the Mets will win this trade in a landslide(the catching prospect will be a stud). Good deal for both clubs.

^ if the jays win a championship would you still say its a landslide? Jays did this trade to win now. Mets did it to win sometime down the road.

Talent wise still yes. As far as the overall trade that depends on if the Jays at least make the playoffs. A 20 something year old power hitting stud catching prospect under club control for 6-7 years is much > than a 37 year old pitcher. Good prospects in baseball are like gold because they are cheap for many years and under club control. A trade like this is unusual in the current Major League Baseball.
However the Jays still did the right thing. They know long term they didn't get equal value. But look at it from Toronto's perspective. NYY and Boston are down. The Jays haven't made the playoffs since 93. They haven't average over 30,000 people since 1998. They are one of the few teams in MLB that haven't been to the playoffs in the last 10 years. If the Jays at least win the division they will be back over 30,000 and really revive interest. This is one of the few rare cases where is it wise to make this type of trade.

Jays are Vegas odds favoured to win the World Series. They've gone from being a laughing stock to being a contender overnight. If they don't win next season, will the team blow up? To me, this all feels like a "one-season-or-bust" strategy.

Let them play a few games before we start calling them contenders.

If Jays make playoffs they won't blow up this roster. If they don't, then all bets are off. Either way, I'm the more excited than I've ever been in the last 15 years for a Jays season to start. The Jays have tried to rebuild and wait approach and it hasn't worked out. Who knows what becomes of D'Arnaud. If there's anything I've learned about MLB draft picks/prospects is their growth is more unpredictable than any other major sport.

This is the biggest deal since the Alomar trade and actually brings in some formidable talent that has legitimatley puts the team in the conversation for a title. This is more than the usual "This year for sure" hype that comes every spring this is a legit contending team.. WTF? I'm usually reserved when it comes to putting down teams that I dislike, but..........BWAAAAHAHAHAHAHA!!
