I listened to the 1290 TSN Big Show this morning for the first time. This is a joke? Correct? It was unfathomable.
Troy Westwood saying "Athletes are "more better" at handling distractions...... More better? Really? lol
The other 2 touched on Masahiro Tanaka signing with the Yankees.
One says he will fail because of the media attention in NYC.
The other counters with, he must of had big media attention in Japan.
The reply: Well yea, but Japan has all Japanese people.
It was so bad I couldn't turn away!!!
I'm going to listen tomorrow to see if perhaps today was just an off day or something.
If this is supposed to be serious, I feel embarrassed for them.

Was living in Philly in 2008! It was unbelievably great! (the only time I experienced a Major League championship in a city I lived in) 93 I was living in Washington State, watching the game at a bar, when Joe hit it.....I was the only one in the bar that stood up and cheered. Boy did I get some nasty looks!
Can't wait for the Jets to win it all. For those that have never experienced it.... It's indescribable!! Pure JOY!! It'll come!!

i liked it better w Jay Richardson. Liebel is conscieted and arrogant. People tune in to hear about the Jets; not some obscure baseball signing in the middle of January for a team thats not even located in Canada; Jets just pulled off the biggest win of the year -- 4 in a row, and baseball and Liebel's visits w/ his grandma take precedence.
I'm done w/ that show.

Did you listen to the entire show? Because I am sure for a SPORTS show, the mandate is to not talk Jets for four straight hours (or whatever it is).
People in this city are nuts. So highly critical. Troy Westwood is a former athlete withj a valid opinion. Does he mis-speak sometimes? Sure he does. He's not a polished broadcaster. I used to get down on Lawless for his terrible speaking ("uhhhh, ummmm") but he's much improved. Now all we can do is ridicule him for being fat like that somehow diminishes his insight.
The morning show is good. Give it another chance. The best part is the often have quality guests.

Agreed in that I think people are being overly critical. Yeah, he said "more better", but that's cherrypicking one gramamtical error out of a pretty valid piece of insight from personal experience.
Also, it is a sports station, not just a Jets station, and they discussed it plenty. My commute was about an hour into the office and at least 40 mins of that was Jets talk. (Having said that, drives me nuts when H&L bring in somebody from Hockey MB to discuss how the under-15 bantam team did in a tournament somewhere.)
I do agree, though, that this version of the crew needs help. Liebl is a smart cat but I appreciate his insights more when he isn't the moderator in charge of moving things along. I like the personal experience as a pro athlete perspective that Westwood brings to the table. Wasn't a big Jay Richardson fan though as I found him to be a little too yell-y and obvious devils' advocate for my tastes.

This city is big enough to have decent sports radio personalities. If you want to cut your teeth in the media, work your way up. Start out in Thunder Bay (no offence to Thunder Bay) Think: do air traffic controllers start out in the big airports?
Winnipeg deserves better.
On the flip side of that coin, I'll probably keep tuning in to laugh at them.
Troy IMO doesn't know a lot aboot hockey.

Yes. I listened to it twice actually, b/c they replay it. People in this city are NOT nuts. They are rabid hockey fans, and this is the hockey season, and we have just beaten arguably the best team in the NHL and extended our win streak to 4 since firing our coach. Not to mention, we broke the Duck's regulation win home streak as well. For a whole week, we've been saying, "....well, sure we beat 3 pretty crappy teams, but the real test will be this road trip...". Well, we won the 1st game when most of the media in this city didn't give us a chance to win the 1st game. How about we talk about that? There is one hour specifically supposed to be devoted to just talking the NHL (7am - NHL Power Hour). I could care a rat's ass about Mitsubishi Teriyaki and Liebel's hate for the Yankees.
Instead, the personalities on this show tend to emphasize their strengths, and believe themselves to be even comical & witty -- which they're not. They come across as arrogant & demeaning. Liebel would rather correct you on your grammar then talk hockey -- or tell you all about his recreational softball team.....who really cares?!?!??! It's bush. We're a major hockey market -- we need major league coverage not a group of hacks.
IMHO: The Jets are the only Major League Pro franchise, and since TSN1290 has paid big bucks to be the "Home of the Jets", then that's what they should be more focused on. Let the CJOB's and the multitue of FM stations be "sports" networks that generalize.
When its baseball season, go knock yourselves out of the park about baseball. Leibel will be a great resource for his baseball knowledge. When its football season, talk 24/7 about football all you want. Westwood has great football knowledge and is a great asset.
Most of you know, I scan/listen to lots of different media out there to find "Jet-specific" news & content. Its sad when our own local sports station chooses to cover something like an off-season baseball signing instead of focusing on whats right here in front of our face. Other cities cover our team better then stations in our own city that are in partnership w/ the Jets....that's sad!
This morning alone there were at least 5-6 major hockey stories alone: (Jets Win, Ducks streak comes to an end, StJohns losing AHL franchise, Thunder Bay gaining AHL franchise, CLB win streak, TML win streak, Stamkos eyeing Olympics, etc.).
There is enough hockey material to easily cover 2 hrs of hockey news.
I'm not against the channel covering other sports; its the timing of what they cover thats the problem...and the "lost opportunity" of not covering the hockey story that is right in front of their face.
Just like True North realizing that it was time to get rid of Claude Noel and get a major league coach like Paul Maurice, it may be time for TSN1290 to shed themselves of some morning personalities and get them some major league hockey people to host the show. The morning show used to be better....it sucks. Time for a shake-up!
I would rather listen to Hnidy, Munz, Beyak, or even Curt Keilback...or an actual hockey writer. None of the guys in the current morning show lineup have any good hockey stories. TSN1290 needs to add a hockey personality to the morning show.....an ex player, coach, hockey writer, hockey broadcaster.....all 3 of the current guys are nobodies when it comes to hockey. Ever ask yourself why Westwood, Liebel, or that other new guy are invited/asked to go on a national broadcaster to talk about the Jets? It's b/c they aren't considered experts in hockey in our own market. As much as Lawless gets flack on this forum, at least he covers hockey and knows people...really, if it wasn't for Hustler & Lawless or Hnidey, Munzy, or Beyak as guests on the Morning Show, it'd be a complete waste of time.
IMHO: The Jets fanbase deserves more!

Kalen Qually @kalenqually 4m The #NHLJets blocked 36 shots last night. According to @eliassports, most shots blocked in a non-OT game since the 04-05 lockout. #bruises
Hmmm...another great story angle missed by the Morning Show....I guess they'd rather talk about over-rated baseball pitchers.

The morning show isnt their premier sports show on 1290. H&L is. Im sure they will decypher every facet of the win last night.
You cant critical Westwood as the athlete voice on the show by saying he doesnt know hockey. Should they have a former pro athlete from every sport on the show? He often gives his experience as a pro athlete and relates it to general terms. Its good insight. I dont know what his hockey knowledge is but I never think he's clueless.
I do agree they are missing an ingredient since Jay left though I wasnt a huge fan of his. I didnt mind him. I thought he was good as the glue, the main host that kept things moving but I found him a bit obnoxious, sarcastic and sort of stereotypical "man" (or at least playing that role).
I certainly prefer H&L and would love to have Hustler on in the morning. But unless they can clone Hustler, its not going to happen.

I certainly prefer H&L and would love to have Hustler on in the morning. But unless they can clone Hustler, its not going to happen. The first season I listened to Westwood go on a big rant about Jets overtime strategy. He went on and on about how against division opponents, since they often were losing in OT, how they should just play for the tie. Jay tried to save him by suggesting he meant play for the tie and hope for better luck in the shootout, but it was clear that Westwood thought there were still ties. I didn't listen to the morning show after that until this season. So I would say that Westwood is pretty clueless about hockey. I'd rather see a different 'local pro' get a shot, but it is what it is and most days I still prefer to listen to people talk about the Jets than listen to music, even if I think the people talking are kinda dumb. And realistically, they do have some good insights (anyone would if it was their job to look at stats and then talk about them for a few hours).

I think people are being way too critical. In my car, my radio is set on 1290 about 99% of the time. IMHO, 1290 is the best station in Winnipeg. The personalities on most FM stations are so obnoxious and I'm tired of hearing the same songs over-and-over. On AM, there's pretty much just CJOB, and CJOB's personalities are a bunch of small-minded old farts. Plus, I still remember how CJOB treated listeners for believing the NHL could return to Winnipeg.

I think you missed the subject of the thread: The Morning Show on TSN 1290. Not the entire radio station. I listen to 1290 all the time; I just think that the morning show needs better people on it -- more hockey-type experts added to the panel would help. Luv H&L; Luv Rona Rountable; like (not luv) warm-up show; Luv IllegalCurve. Just think Winnipeg fans deserve a more professional morning show. Its lacking something...I find myself second-guessing everything that they say on the morning show. Mostly b/c they are repeatedly wrong or misinformed.
