Yes. Do it now to get the value. Can't afford a rich contract downside of thirty. Plus he said he's not interested in a rebuild. That basically is a signal to this GM. Cheveldayoff has ignored the blaringly obvious for several years now. I believe he cannot be trusted to clean up the mess he has made. With his record, he will be tempted to go for the short-term payoff and sacrifice the future in order to save his ass.

I hope to heck they do not bring him up to the Jets until that rot in the team is resolved. We do not need to see a promising player brought down to the compete level of the past 3 seasons.

Pretty damning assessment of the Jets. This quote as an example:"The Chipman/Chevy marriage has emphasized continuity over results. Proof? Wheeler, Scheifele, Connor, Ehlers, and PLD/Laine have all been negatives defensively, based on Expected Goals Against/60 and Corsi Against/60."
Post Laine Wheeler and Scheif have been negative prima donnas. Content on screwing up the dressing room and Scheif this last year particularly not even concerned with puck distribution but in bolstering his goal stats. The fallout demonstrated itself in missing the playoffs last year, one of the greatest 2nd half of the season dumps this year and an embarrassing playoff exit.

Turn over savants was pretty funny. Jets management just continues with their own internal Wheeler window circle jerk while ignoring the obvious- the team did not have the make up for the playoffs. One wonders if they are not bright enough hockey people to see that or they just ignored the obvious and crossed their fingers and hoped.

By contrast, the Panther players have been giving glowing accolades to Maurice for installing a defensive system that supports breakouts and Bobrovski.

www.markerzone.com/news/index.php?no=238226"Winnipeg Prospect Slams the Team and says He's Never Going Back" ""...You Don't Even get Rewarded" Leon Gawanke was drafted in the fifth round, 135th overall, in 2017. The 23-year-old has so far spent his entire pro career in the AHL with the Manitoba Moose. He progressed year over year, finishing 2022-23 with 20 goals and 45 points from the blueline. Gawanke believes he should have gotten a shot in the big league....." Yep. Draft and develop. More like develop and screw.

So is Zinger just as culpable as Chevy with the lack of opportunity given to a lot of the prospects? How would have the defence core performed with Stanley, Kovacevic, and Gawanke, in the place of Schmidt, Demelo, Pionk? The coach really doesn't have much of a say as to whom gets called up. That's in Chevy's and Zinger's hands. Trading some veterans for draft picks and calling up some prospects on defence might not qualify as a rebuild but damn close. You can use some of your veteran D and Dubois and Scheif to make player (hockey) trades to replace those centre ice positions. Unfortunately the only thing you can do with Wheeler is buy him out. Get off your ass Chipman and get it done. The lack of butts in the stands fall squarely in your lap Mark.

Gwanke was likely never going to be an MHL player. He was behind Ville and Chilsolm on the Moose in terms of NHL ability. Having said that, it is not a great 'look' to hear what he said. Of all our young D, it is really on Samberg at this time we can safely say is an NHL Defenceman. Even Kovacevich (sp) was a 5/6 for a near last place team - he was still mis-managed - but our D prospect pool is not NHL ready.

Having watched the Moose for years, I think Gawanke is overvaluing himself, especially with the comments suggesting lesser players were given a shot. In my mind, Gawanke is a tweener (AHL star/3rd pairing offense d-man) and while Winnipeg probably should have gotten rid of Schmidt this year to make room for Kovacevic (who was a physical bottom pairing player on a bad Habs team, but put up impressive advanced stats while doing so) but that still would have left Gawanke in the AHL.
Could the Jets have gotten him into a game or two this year and possibly avoid this situation, absolutely. The problem is Winnipeg hasn't been strong defensively for years and it's hard to slip offensively talented but defensively suspect players (Chisholm, Heinola, & Gawanke) into the lineup. That's why it was a horrible decision to risk Kovacevic being claimed on waivers, as he was the only physical defensive prospect nearing NHL readiness other than Samberg the Jets had.

That's why it was a horrible decision to risk Kovacevic being claimed on waivers, as he was the only physical defensive prospect nearing NHL readiness other than Samberg the Jets had. The comparison would be Gawanke and Heinola as both are offensive dmen. However Heinola was a dd plus player this year where Gawanke was a single digit minus player. Gawanke was the better goal scorer where Heinola was a very good puck distributor as proportionately higher assists. Gawanke is slightly bigger at 6'01 where Heinola is 5'11. If I had to choose between the two for the bump up it would be Heinola. Gawanke's exasperation may be reflective of a deeper malaise on the draft and develop notion amongst the Moose. However, it's time the Jets get big on d and neither provide the physicality. But I do say the three Jets, Schmidt, Pionk, DeMelo need to be traded for size. The Jets will have to emphasize size and grit given the potential loss of goal scoring if Chevy can do his job.
